TSS RS500 2 Cylinder 2 Stroke

TSS RS500 2 cylinder 2 stroke

TSS RS500 2 cylinder 2 stroke engineWhile most everyone else has moved on to the land of 4 strokes, there’s a group of intrepid engineers and builders in Australia devoted to the idea of building a 500cc 2 cylinder 2 stroke motorcycle, starting with the Aprilia RS250 chassis and installing their own highly engineered 2 stroke powerplant.

Grand Prix Engineer Wayne “Wobbly” Wright who has a 30 year career building GP engines and pipes went to work on the engine and the finished piece puts out 112 horsepower and 60 foot pounds of torque. Mounted in a bike weighing 286 pounds total and having the power delivery you would expect from a 2 stroke gives you a bike that one might call entertaining.

The idea here is to bring 2 stroke technology up to the best that can be built right now and place it in a modern frame and suspension package, a combination you can’t buy in your neighborhood showroom.

The company the group formed is called the Two Stroke Shop, and besides many other parts for the 2 stroke fanatic, they offer not only complete RS 500 motorcycles but also the engines alone or kits to adapt your own RS250 to accept their engine.

There are no prices on the site, expensive I’m sure, but what they offer seems somewhat unique. It’s an extremely interesting setup and just the thing to surprise the heck out of your average GSX-R pilot. I like it.

Honda 50 Powered Vintage Bicycle Project

Honda powered vintage bike project

Here’s an interesting project that takes little money, isn’t too hard to do and actually has a practical side, it’s a Huffy bicycle found at a flea market, a couple of vintage looking pieces found on eBay, a new Honda 50cc engine and a few other modifications to make it look like an early grey Harley Davidson.

According to the builder it gets about 120 mpg and cruises at a comfortable 25 to 30 mph with a top speed approaching 40 mph.

Looks like a cool project to get the kids involved in a little “hands on” activity or something to get your own hands into the building process. Neat.

2009 Confederate C120 Renaissance Fighter

2009 Confederate Fighter

Confederate Motors has put more photos of their new Confederate Fighter up on their web site, or more accurately the “C120 Renaissance Fighter.” It’s a much better look at how everything goes together, it was difficult to get an idea of proportions from the single perspective of the catalog shot.

One thing that would be helpful is a photo of a rider on the bike to get an idea of the ergonomics. The seat looks a bit uncomfortable and the feet forward / lean forward appearance doesn’t help, but that’s just what can be seen from these shots and a bit of imagination. It may work out very well.

Just noticed something, the catalog shot and these shots have a different girder fork, different exhaust arrangement, too. Hmm …

Interesting and definitely different!

Marisa Miller on Harley Davidson Muscle

Marisa Miller on the Harley Davidson V-Rod Muscle

Harley Davidson is about to launch a series of ads for the V-Rod Muscle featuring supermodel Marisa Miller. What’s not to like?

Harley Davidson press release:

To emphasize the non-traditional pairing of sophisticated style and brute strength, Harley-Davidson chose to launch the new 2009 V-Rod Muscle in a distinctly non-traditional way—by teaming up with American Supermodel Marisa Miller in an innovative marketing campaign to introduce the latest addition to Harley-Davidson’s high-performance line of V-Rod motorcycles.

The new V-Rod Muscle features a powerfully sculpted new physique that exudes a contemporary and urban sense of style. The Muscle’s long, low profile and super wide rear tire are inspired by the drag strip, while the free-revving performance of the liquid-cooled Revolution V-Twin engine co-developed with Porsche give it an unmatched combination of power and sophistication.

More photos below:

“The V-Rod Muscle stands out in a crowd of copies and generic motorcycle profiles,” said Mark-Hans Richer, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Harley-Davidson. “It stretches the very definition of what it means to be a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.”

Partnering with American supermodel Marisa Miller is a perfect match. The V-Rod Muscle’s sculpted body and commanding physique complement Miller, who not only represents classic American beauty, but also strength and athleticism. Miller is best known for gracing the cover of many prominent publications, but she also represents the return of the great American Supermodel. Miller grew up around motorcycles in California and has a strong appreciation for Harley-Davidson.

“To represent such an iconic American brand is incredible,” said Miller. “I have grown up watching my dad and uncle ride Harleys. It’s amazing to circle back at this point in my career, and work with a brand I have so much respect for.”

Like the bike itself, Harley-Davidson chose a distinctly non-traditional marketing campaign for the V-Rod Muscle. Starting Oct. 13, an ad campaign launches that shows Miller stretched atop a sleek, black V-Rod Muscle. The black background and distinct lighting capture the aggressive styling of the bike, contrasted by Miller, which brings the idea of American Supermodel to life. In lifestyle magazines such as GQ, Esquire, Complex, Road & Track and Trader, ads will make use of a new technology called SnapTell, which provides access to exclusive content upon photographing the ad with a mobile phone camera.

The campaign was pre-launched on Oct. 6 on Harley-Davidson’s official YouTube channel, with a “making of” video that takes viewers behind the scenes at the Marisa Miller V-Rod Muscle photo shoot (http://www.youtube.com/harleydavidson). Motorcycle bloggers and Harley-Davidson fans and friends on Facebook and MySpace were exclusively tipped off to the campaign. The video will also be available on www.h-d.com/muscle which launches Oct.13.

Pettinari heat up the Triumph Street Triple and Daytona 675...

Pics: Motociclismo

Pettinari have worked their special brand of high-performance magic on the two Triumphs you see here. Starting with the Daytona 675, the three-cylinder has been tuned and fettled to produce 130 horsepower (at the rear wheel), and the bike is now capable of hitting a top speed of 293km/h!

The Daytona’s stock exhaust has been replaced with a complete Arrow system, while the stock ECU has been replaced with a Magneti Marelli Marvel 4 unit, which now controls the bike’s fuel injection, data acquisition, traction control and launch control systems. The bike’s stock fork has been retained, but with fully reworked internals, while the rear shock is a fully adjustable Bitubo unit.

The Pettinari Street Triple gets a special red-and-black paintjob, 3-into-1 aftermarket exhaust system, and slightly lower gearing for better acceleration. The suspension and brakes have been tweaked and fine-tuned for improved performance. The red anodized fork and red painted wheels look a bit over the top to us, but otherwise the bike looks good…

Aprilia working on Shiver 1200, Dorsoduro 1200

Aprilia may unveil the Shiver 1200 and the Dorsoduro 1200 at the EICMA show in Milan next month!
Pics: SoloMoto

SoloMoto seem to have got a spy pic of the Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200, which the Italian company might unveil at the upcoming EICMA show in Milan next month. Along with the Dorsoduro 1200, Aprilia are also expected to show the Shiver 1200.

Both bikes will be fitted with Aprilia’s new, 1200cc, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, DOHC, 8-valve v-twin, which makes 130bhp at 9,000rpm and 120Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. Given that the Shiver/Dorsoduro 750 engine makes 90bhp and 75Nm of torque, the 1200 should be considerably more entertaining, especially since the increase in weight is expected to be only around 5 to 7 kilos…

The Aprilia Shiver / Dorsoduro 1200 will be fitted with Öhlins suspension components, Brembo brakes monoblock radial-mount calipers and perhaps some carbonfibre bits.

Finally, another rumour doing the rounds is that in addition to the Shiver and Dorsoduro 1200 bikes, Aprilia may also unveil a brand-new Caponord 1200, and dual-purpose adventure-tourer which would be slotted against the BMW R1200GS. Now all you have to do is wait for the EICMA to kick off next month, and all shall be revealed…!

Press Release

Citroen is revealing its new concept car, Citroen Hypnos, at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. An elegant and distinctive cross-over vehicle, Citroen Hypnos explores new avenues in the design of luxury ecological vehicles. Its creative technologies deliver outstanding performance and environmental efficiency, combined with subtle but powerful motoring sensations.

Citroen Hypnos - HYmotion4 technology for guaranteed thrills and efficiency

The special hybrid technology used on Citroen Hypnos highlights Citroen’s commitment to the environment and shows once again that this strong ecological focus is always accompanied by driving thrills and efficiency. Feasible from an industrial standpoint, the architecture of the concept car’s HYmotion4 diesel hybrid drivetrain features a rear axle-mounted electric motor. This innovative and particularly simple set-up is a perfect fit with the character of Citroen Hypnos, optimising dynamic performance and traction while delivering impressively low fuel consumption and emissions (4.5 l/100 km and 120 g/km of CO2).

And Citroen has made this advanced hybrid technology even more attractive by giving it the form of a beautifully proportioned and boldly styled concept car.

Citroen Hypnos Car

Citroen Hypnos - Spellbinding style

Citroen Hypnos’ sleek, flowing body lines and high-set stance atop 22-inch wheels clearly denote a car looking for new driving thrills.

The initial appeal of the exterior styling is confirmed inside. The cabin, with its original colors, makes the technology more human and approachable, as illustrated by the dreamlike clock, color therapy and body-hugging seats.

Passengers enjoy a powerful sensory experience, verging on the magical.

Citroen Hypnos

Citroen Hypnos is a hybrid in terms of both technology and styling. The body combines the vitality and elegance of a saloon with the volumes of a cross-over.

Powerful, flowing and expressive, Citroen Hypnos’ unique proportions and balance promise a driving experience of outstanding emotion. The concept car’s rear-hinged doors and color-splashed interior draw onlookers in and make them want to climb aboard.

Premium cabin materials, exceptionally comfortable individual seats and dreamlike in-car technology are designed to set high standards in driving pleasure and passenger comfort.

Citroen Hypnos Image

Citroen Hypnos - Innovative and elegant body style

Citroen Hypnos exudes exceptional elegance and strength with its dynamic, sculpted body lines that are both taut and fluid.

Citroen Hypnos is eye-catchingly proportioned at 4.90 m long, 2.17 m wide and 1.58 m high. From the pronounced wheel arches to the tautly drawn bonnet and raised waistline, all the body lines reflect strong but sophisticated muscle power.

Citroen Hypnos also appeals with its vitality, giving the impression of movement even when at rest. The pillarless “floating” roof, suggesting generous interior space, flows purposefully back to the concave rear window so typical of Citroen executive saloons. The feeling of movement is also conveyed by the powerfully sculpted flanks.

Citroen Hypnos’ sleek looks are showcased by the deep radiant grey of the bodywork. Varying in intensity according to the light, this color gives Citroen Hypnos an elegant and prestigious sheen commensurate with its luxury standing.

The rear-hinged doors on Hypnos make access easier, revealing the vehicle’s prestige interior as if uncovering a jewel. A cargo tailgate at the back gives unrestricted access to the boot. Alongside their aesthetic appeal, these opening systems add to the car’s functionality and underline its identity as a vehicle for long-distance travel.

Citroen Hypnos Photo

Citroen Hypnos - A luxurious welcome

The ambience inside Citroen Hypnos is light years away from a conventional motoring experience. The cabin embodies the magical content of the concept car, making each journey an unforgettable sensory adventure.

The shimmering interior makes a dramatic and eye-catching break with the deep grey bodywork. Onlookers will marvel at the rainbow hues of the cabin. Using these bright colors in the interior of an executive car interior underlines Citroen’s creativity.

Using premium materials such as leather and brushed aluminum, the Marque has produced an exceptionally refined cabin that creates a feeling of comfort and confirms the exceptional nature of Hypnos.

The cabin contains four seats positioned on either side of a central helix in a unique configuration that brings to mind DNA and organic life, reflecting Citroen’s focus on human values.

The long, three-meter wheelbase combined with the original, staggered seat layout gives each passenger an astonishing amount of personal space. Never have the passengers in a vehicle of this size had this much room. Leg room, for example, is practically that of a limousine.

In keeping with executive standards of comfort, passengers can customise their own space using the pivoting blades of the central helix, which include a range of controls, such as the air conditioning settings. The seats are made up of prism-shaped components that can be inflated and deflated to give occupants upper and lower back massages.

Citroen Hypnos

Citroen Hypnos - Creative interior design

Citroen is committed to making technology more human, accessible and attractive. Giving fitting physical form to this technology and adding new, almost magical, content was one of the main aims when designing Citroen Hypnos.

The instrument cluster in front of the driver is presented through prisms, like a diamond, with each facet displaying driving information. And like a jewel, the cluster is mounted in a metal setting of premium quality. This cluster is the main feature at the front of the cabin, embracing a touch screen in the middle of the console and encompassing air vents on either side of the dashboard.

Using micro-diodes located inside the air-conditioning duct, the air vents gently diffuse halos of soft light, in a color that varies with the chosen temperature.

Citroen Hypnos also innovates by bringing passengers the benefits of color therapy. A ceiling-mounted camera films the driver’s face and regularly measures anthropometric data. The system compares these measures with pre-recorded data to gauge the driver’s state of mind and adjusts the cabin lighting and scented air-freshener fragrance in consequence. Travelling in Hypnos is a remarkable experience in relaxation.

Citroen Hypnos combines technology with creativity to striking effect with its original onboard clock, designed by the artist Michel Serviteur. Combining advanced technology and sheer poetry, the clock changes color depending on the light at different times of day. Dispensing with needles and digital read-outs, this dreamlike timepiece emits a succession of rhythmic color pulses like the breathing of a living being.

Citroen Hypnos

Citroen’s active policy of environmental protection has made it one of today’s leading manufacturers in this field. The Marque is underlining its position as a pioneering carmaker by fitting Hypnos with an all-new diesel hybrid drivetrain: HYmotion4. This original technology combines dynamic performance with respect for the environment and low fuel consumption.

Citroen Hypnos Concept

Citroen Hypnos - HYmotion4: innovation for the environment

The intelligent design of the Citroen Hypnos concept car combines:

a 200 bhp (147 kW) 2-litre HDi DPFS diesel engine mated to a six-speed electronic gearbox system, with torque of 420 Nm;

an electric motor located on the rear axle developing 50 bhp for 200 Nm of torque.

Citroen Hypnos’ diesel hybrid technology is designed to respect the environment. This is particularly true in the city in ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) mode – an “extended”, completely silent all-electric mode with a range of around 3 km at 50 kph – and on roads demanding successive acceleration and deceleration. In this second case, the hybrid architecture limits consumption by using the two forms of energy together.

Hypnos is also equipped with high-power Stop & Start technology that cuts out the engine when the car comes to a halt in urban traffic jams or at red lights. This system also powers the electric motor when the vehicle is in 4x4 mode.

The 2-litre HDi DPFS diesel engine is extremely efficient on the motorway, cutting fuel consumption by 20% compared with a petrol engine.

By controlling fuel consumption and, hence, pollutant emissions, Citroen Hypnos boasts combined cycle consumption levels of 4.5 l/100 km for CO2 emissions of 120 g/km.

Citroen Hypnos Concept

Citroen Hypnos - HYmotion4: hot-blooded driving thrills

No sacrifices have been made in terms of driving pleasure, which remains a key priority for motorists. If the driver keeps a foot on the accelerator pedal, the boost function kicks in to provide the immediate torque required. This function combines the torque of the combustion engine with that of the electric motor to deliver outstanding performance without increasing fuel consumption. Hypnos accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 9.4 seconds and takes 31 seconds to travel 1,000 m from a standing start.

Driving pleasure, rather than sheer speed, was the goal with Citroen Hypnos.

To this end, it was equipped with the third-generation hydraulic suspension fitted on Citroen’s upmarket models. This technology combines the highest standards in passenger comfort with benchmark road manners.

In situations of low grip or intense handling, the car switches to four-wheel drive mode, with the electric motor powering the back wheels and the combustion engine the front wheels. Four-wheel drive mode brings improved traction and ensures full use of the potential of Citroen Hypnos in all grip conditions and in complete safety.

In particularly difficult driving conditions, such as a snow-covered uphill road, the driver can select 4×4 mode.

Genesis Coupe projects a unique sports car look with strong character lines, pronounced shoulders and dynamic details. The aggressive, wedge-like silhouette, short overhangs and long wheelbase give it classic sports car proportions.

Inside and out, the design is thoroughly provocative and emotionally-charged. The exterior front styling radiates a sporty character. Its dynamic, voluminous hood, carefully articulated bumper surfacing and sharply distinctive headlamps combine to give hints of strong performance.

Two signature design elements truly define the Genesis Coupe’s highly distinctive look and escalate its dynamic appeal: the emotionally sculpted Z-line and the unique day light opening of the quarter glass. The rear view with its two-tone bumper and dual square-shaped exhaust tips project a solid, vigorous look.

The interior with its aggressive and futuristic design reflects sophistication and sportiness in every detail. Powerful and elegant, exclusive materials have been applied to the interior to create a unique atmosphere. Dual cylinder-type gauge cluster, a floor-mounted accelerator pedal and engine start button are among the innovative design touches.

A full bucket-type driver’s seat provides excellent support at all critical points. For convenient entry and egress, the front seat backrests feature walk-in memory design so that the original position of the backrest is restored on entry or egress of the rear seat passengers. Rear seats can be made to quickly fold down with the folding lever in the cabin or the folding button in the trunk.

With its 2820mm wheelbase (290mm longer than the Tiburon/Coupe), Genesis Coupe’s cabin provides more headroom, legroom and shoulder room than its predecessor.

The 55/45 front-rear weight distribution endows Genesis Coupe with near-ideal balance for exceptional handling and more refined steering characteristics.

The advantages of a rear-wheel-drive setup include:

- Transfer of weight to the rear axle during heavy acceleration which improves traction
- Larger steering radius as there are no complicated drive shaft joints in the front wheels so that they can now be turned farther
- Better handling and braking thanks to even weight distribution so that the front and rear tires and springs are placed under more even loads, allowing for more grip during cornering and braking

Hyundai Genesis Coupe - Superior Performance

The Genesis Coupe is the most thrilling performance coupe yet from Hyundai and most importantly, it is attainable – It promises to be the most affordable 300-hp sport coupe on the planet!

At the heart of the story are two performance-focused engines: The range-topping, all aluminum 310 horsepower (premium fuel), 306 horsepower (regular fuel), DOHC 3.8-liter V6 Lambda RS. The base engine will be the 223 horsepower (premium fuel), 210 horsepower (regular fuel) 2.0-liter turbocharged Theta.

Based on the highly successful Lambda V-6 first introduced in 2004, the high performance RS edition (Racing Sport) of the Lambda features several key modifications which have raised power to a maximum of 303ps@6300rpm (306 horsepower for US market) and peak torque to 36.8kg/m@4700rpm enabling the Genesis Coupe to catapult from zero to 100km/h in just 6.3 seconds. The Lambda RS features all-aluminum construction, Dual CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing) on both the intake and exhaust valves and a revised intake system.

Because of the sporty, low hood line of the Genesis Coupe, RS engineers were forced to redesign the intake and exhaust systems trimming 5cm from its height.

The exhaust manifold’s length and cross section were optimized for reduced resistance which maximizes high speed performance and yields a pleasingly sporty exhaust note. At the same time, the diameter of the intake port in the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control) module was enlarged to improve engine breathing.

Attention was also paid to stiffening the aluminum engine block so it could endure higher stresses while a piston cooling jet was added under each cylinder to reduce thermal loading and prevent heat damage. A further boost in performance was attained by adopting more aggressive camshaft profiles on the Continuously Variable Valve Timing system which governs both the intake and exhaust valves. The V-6 is mated to a six-speed ZF automatic with a 3.4 final drive ratio. A six-speed manual is also available and features a short-stroke shifter (under 41mm), optimized gear ratios and triple cone synchronizers (1st, 2nd and 3rd gears) for smoother shifts.

For economy, Hyundai offers the Theta 2.0-liter inline four cylinder engine with a turbocharger for excellent performance. Maximum power is rated 210ps @ 6000rpm (210 horsepower for US market) while peak torque is 30.5kg-m @ 2000rpm (30.8kg-m for US market), sufficient to propel the car from 0-100km/h in just 8.3 sec. Like the V-6, the Theta employs a Dual CVVT system plus a piston oil cooling jet which is positioned under each cylinder to deliver improved cooling and better fuel efficiency.

Genesis Coupe’s chassis has been optimized for dynamic handling and more accurate steering feeling. Dual MacPherson struts in the front improve maneuverability by reducing the offset between the wheel center and the tie rods and increasing the caster angle.

For securing body rigidity while cornering, a front tower strut bar is optional. The rear rides on a five-link setup with reduced toe variation during acceleration, braking and cornering thus yielding precise maneuverability.

The Limited Slip Differential features a torque sensor for improved ride and handling under any road conditions. The rear differential transfer case sits atop a three-point mounting system (including a hydraulic bush mounting) for reduced noise and vibration

Mono tube-type shock absorbers have separate gas and oil chambers to enable stable damping force resulting in better ride and road holding performance.

The use of crash durable adhesives in critical areas has increased dynamic torsional rigidity by 15 percent enabling better ride and handling, increased safety performance and reduced NVH. The Coupe is one of the quietest cars in its class thanks to special reinforcements and applications of various poly-urethane foam as well as sound interceptive materials that have helped eliminate both noise and vibration.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe - Safety

The use of high strength steel enhances safety and overall performance by achieving a stiffer, lighter body structure. When combined with the six-airbag system, active headrests, Genesis Coupe is expected to earn a five-star crash safety rating.

The Genesis Coupe promises to stop just as fast as it goes. Premium high performance disc brakes from Brembo will be available as part of an optional track–use performance package. For the Genesis Coupe´s front 18–inch wheels, Brembo engineers developed 13.4–inch x 1.1–inch rotors (340mm x 28mm) and four–pot fixed calipers (42mm+42mm) while the rear setup features 13.0–inch x 0.78–inch rotors (330mm x 20mm) gripped by four–pot fixed calipers (32mm+28mm).

At the highest level of international motorsports, Brembo´s signature fixed monobloc brake callipers and oversized rotors are recognized as delivering the ultimate in braking performance. The Italian brake manufacturer is acknowledged as the world leader in high performance braking systems and is a supplier to the world´s best–known formula racing teams as well as Italian and German manufacturers of supercars and sports cars.

Available safety equipment also includes Electronic Stability Program which uses the speed sensors on each wheel and the ability to brake individual wheels that are the basis of antilock brakes. ESP adds a control unit that monitors steering wheel angle and vehicle rotation around the vehicle’s vertical axis.

This unit uses the steering and rotation information to detect that the vehicle is about to travel in a direction different from the one indicated by the steering wheel position. Then ESP automatically brakes the appropriate wheel to help the driver maintain control.

Touches of convenience include USB/iPod connectors, auxilliary audio inputs, 5.6-inch information display unit (for audio controls, digital clock, climate control, inside/outside temperature) and steering wheel-mounted remote controls for the audio system. An eight-speaker Infinity sound system is optional.

Hyundai hopes to sell 40,000 Genesis Coupes annually, 5,000 in Korea and 35,000 in overseas markets. The Genesis Coupe’s target customer is a middle-aged male (64 percent) looking for superior performance in terms of acceleration and handling. The competitive set includes the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Nissan Altima Coupe and Mustang.

Korean retail prices start at 23,200,000 Korean won for the base version and with full options, including the V-6 Lamda RS engine, the Coupe tops out at 33,920,000 Korean won.
