The Renovatio (Latin for "Rebirth") concept motorbike from Confederate Motorcycles based in America is a radical concept bike designed by Confederate's lead designer Ed Jacobs.The Renovatio is extremely minimalistic with all the mechanical elements of the bike on show. With large attachment points easily accessible on the engine, upgrades and various configurations can easily be exchanged.The 135 horsepower, 125 ft/lbs of torque V-twin engine of the Confederate Renovatio concept was built by Katech Inc. of Detroit. Katech was hired to design five prototype engines, they chose to base the 1686 cc (103 cu in) V-twin on General Motors LS7 7.0 litre V8. Katech were also responsible for the 16 cylinder engine found in the Cadillac Sixteen concept car of 2003.Confederate already manufacure two high-end and unique bikes, the Confederate Wraith and the Hellcat F131. The Confederate Renovatio is a concept created inline with Confederates current vision. Production of the Renovatio is scheduled for 2007.

Nissan Nuvu Concept Car

Nissan Nuvu concept had been displayed at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. Nissan Nuvu concept is designed to preview the next generation compact car from Nissan, as well as provide a testbed for a new, all-electric drivetrain.

Nissan Nuvu concept is powered by a compact rear-mounted electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. This setup gives the Nissan Nuvu concept a 77 mile (125 km) range, and reach the top speed at 75 mph (120 km/h). A quick charge from empty to full should take between 10 to 20 minutes while a full charge should take between three to four hours from a domestic 220v socket.

To top up the battery pack the Nissan Nuvu has unusual solar panel array which is integrated into the panoramic glass roof. Across the all-glass roof are a dozen or so small solar panels. Shaped like leaves on a branch, the power they generate is fed to the battery using a ‘tree trunk’ within the car as a conduit. The Nissan Nuvu also uses natural, organic and recycled materials within the cabin.

Axon Automotive is a new company from UK that uses affordable carbon fiber manufacturing techniques to build fuel efficient cars. As announced by Axon Automotive, that they will entered their Axon hatchback in the Automotive X Prize competition.

Curb appeal begins with the Kia KOUP’s balanced proportions and fluid design. From the tab-shaped and purposeful upper grille to the high-tech and pragmatic headlamps, the front fascia’s form gives the vehicle a bold and aggressive stance.

The Kia KOUP features an uncomplicated yet dynamic wedge shape along its sides stemming from its glowing, carbon fiber and black chrome enhanced LED lamp lenses.

While the KOUP’s overall form is simple and precise, it makes a design statement with positive tension created by a “swoosh” that swoops from the “C” pillar forward, down to the “A” pillar and flares all the way back around to the rear deck lid. A trailing horizontal lip along the deck lid tapers up toward the outer ends to meet up with the swoosh from the beltline. The rocker sill has a distinctive “check mark” shape and prominent wheel flares that give the Kia KOUP a strong, lowered stance. The short overhangs and wide stance reflect its well-balanced and responsive character.

No element of high-style design is missing in the KOUP concept as illustrated by its greenhouse-integrated, panoramic-view glass with two panels extending from the windshield through the roof to the backlight, appearing as two parallel pieces of glass – similar to a fighter jet cockpit. Segregating the glass panels, an interior mood light runs the full length of the greenhouse. To further the performance-inspired appearance with sporty elegance, carbon fiber enhancements accent the Kia KOUP’s chin spoiler, lamp lenses, cowl panel, side-view mirrors, rear bumper insert and rear diffuser, while flashy twin wheel spokes include carbon fiber inserts paired with an open design to show off the Brembo® calipers and cross-drilled rotors.

Conceived artfully and with graphic precision, the KOUP’s interior hones in on the desires of auto enthusiasts from the inward lean of the dashboard and Supervision instrument panel, enhancing the performance-inspired driving experience to the custom-designed, race-inspired steering wheel in front of a three-gauge instrument cluster. Carbon fiber accents on the shifter plate and seat tilt-adjust mechanism reinforce sporty performance.

Audiophiles and car enthusiasts alike will take heed of eight speakers, including large rear deck speakers matched to a juke box audio system, further harmonizing the driving experience. A built-in Bluetooth-enabled navigation system with Map On Demand (MOD) is just the beginning of the telematics services, including safe driving, car maintenance and life/assistance offerings.

The KOUP features a realistic interior design that integrates high-style materials, including rich and supple seat fabrics accentuated with concrete- and black-color trims. As a true driver’s car, the front seats contrast the rear seats with opposing colors and patterning and horizontal, padded silicone bars occupy the seat backs for extra comfort. Powered by a commanding 2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged engine producing 290 horsepower paired with a GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) twin scroll turbocharger for greater power and efficiency, the Kia KOUP delivers astonishing torque of 289 lb-ft at a low 2,000 rpm sustained to 4,000 rpm. By injecting fuel directly into the cylinder under high pressure using the Kia GDI system, the intake charge is cooled and combustion behavior is improved. Improved combustion assures excellent fuel economy and low emissions. Lower grille openings enable additional air intake for extra power.

Built on a front-wheel-drive unibody frame, coil springs and stabilizer bars complement an independent front suspension featuring MacPherson struts and an independent dual link rear suspension to provide the optimal balance of ride comfort and engine responsiveness. An engine-speed-sensitive, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system adds the finishing touch for precise handling. The IFR Aspid features an ultra-lightweight aluminum extrusion composite panelled chassis with a mass of just 75kg. This structure offers up to ten times the torsional stiffness of a conventional un-panelled space-frame and enhanced crash protection.

Award-winning Spanish automotive design and technology company IFR Automotive has revealed a wealth of weight, fuel and CO2 saving technical innovations running throughout the chassis, suspension, brakes and electrical systems of its new Aspid luxury sportscar making its world debut at the British International Motor Show.

The Aspid’s 700kg kerb weight is minimal by any standard and less than half the weight of a typical premium sportscar. With 400bhp available from its 2-litre supercharged engine the virtually unmatched power-to-weight ratio gives awesome acceleration with the car reaching 62mph in 2.8 seconds and 100mph in 5.9 seconds.

The Aspid is also very compact - with a wheelbase smaller than a city car - and cleverly packaged to accommodate even the tallest driver and passenger. Despite its size, the fully enclosed two-seater is comprehensively equipped and as far removed from being a ‘stripped down to the bare essentials’ track-day special that you could possibly imagine, which its performance figures would also suggest. It is first and foremost a premium sportscar designed for the road.

“The whole point of the Aspid is that it is small and lightning fast, just like its namesake,” says company founder Ignacio Fernández Rodriquez. “But we also believe it’s the first genuine attempt at producing an unusually compact luxury sportscar, not just with impeccable road holding and handling, but also with the highest possible quality for a car of its size.”

“Our market research confirms the importance of a supercar having strong emotional appeal. But it also has to be totally unique. Combine these two factors with the need for robust environmental credentials and the result is what we’ve endeavoured to achieve with the Aspid.”

Looking at the bigger picture, Fernández believes all the technical innovations the company has developed for the Aspid could be applied to a wide range of vehicles including mass produced cars, thereby making a relevant contribution to sustainable personal mobility.

Underpinning its massive weight saving is an ultra-lightweight aluminum extrusion composite panelled chassis with a mass of just 75kg.

The new and innovative construction method offers up to ten times the torsional stiffness of a conventional un-panelled space-frame and enhanced crash protection.

Similarly, the car’s major innovation in its suspension is an ultra-lightweight aluminum extrusion, developed for the double wishbone system, with a special profile that provides immense stiffness and rigidity in all directions and minimises stresses under torsional, longitudinal and vertical bending loads.

The Aspid also introduces an ultra-lightweight stainless steel brake system comprised of thin twin discs each with turbine-shaped slots for maximum air cooling and braking efficiency. The design results in a low un-sprung mass and rotational inertia and a weight saving of more than 70 per cent compared with normal brake systems.

IFR’s expertise in vehicle dynamics has allowed the company to extract the maximum benefit from all this weight reduction, to provide the driver with massively enhanced feedback through the steering wheel, sublime handling and a superb grip of the road at all times thanks to the excellent balance it has achieved by using lightweight structures throughout the car.

The impressive weight saving, however, doesn’t end there. Aspid features an all-new and fully-integrated electronic and electrical system developed for the whole car. The company has reduced the usual complexity of these systems by eliminating countless components, assemblies and microprocessors.

The result is a significant reduction in the weight of electrical systems and harnessing to around one-third that of current layouts with a comparable reduction in the number of microprocessors to about one for every four that would typically be specified in a modern car. IFR has achieved this without compromising the myriad tasks that need to be performed. In fact, the opposite is true and the level of functionality has actually increased.

The most noticeable change for the driver is the elimination of traditional instrumentation replaced by one or more interactive touch screens. These allow the driver to change many parameters such as the rev limit, valve timing, power output, steering assistance, ABS, noise valve, brake balance, ride height, traction and stability controls, as well as influencing the pitch, roll and yaw of the car by adjusting its damping characteristics.

For motorsport enthusiasts the system offers an in-built and extendable data logging capability, readily configured for all OBD (onboard diagnostics) and CAN (control area network) sensors with 24 analogue channels available and upwards. For the road this is complemented by GPS satellite navigation, GPRS/GSM mobile communications, motion sensing accelerometers, Wi Fi wireless technology, Ethernet interface connections, as well as touch screens for both driver and co-driver.

The system can help reconfigure the car to suit different drivers and different driving conditions and can ensure the Aspid is set-up correctly for the road or track. It can even direct the driver through a series of tests and operations that will enable it to calculate engine torque and power.

“The result of all these technical innovations, careful choice of materials and volumetric efficiency is a high level of performance without compromising the ease with which the car can be driven on normal roads,” says Fernández. “Its compact design makes the most efficient use of the Aspid’s available space and the whole car is extremely well packaged. Its low mass and significant weight advantage also ensures excellent fuel economy and correspondingly low CO2 emissions.”

The Aspid will be displayed throughout the motor show in the north hall (stand N8A) of the ExCel exhibition centre. The show runs from 23 July to 3 August 2008.

The employment of heat-reflective paint and insulating bodywork featuring large surface areas contributes to the reduction of temperature fluctuations which traditionally prompt the use of climate control or heating systems which are big consumers of energy. Insulation is further optimized by the use of acid green-tinted glass for the glazed areas.
