Yamaha Releases All-New R6 for 2005





Starting out to give the 2005 R6 more horsepower and a new fork, the R6 nearly became new motorcycle with new camshafts, bigger throttle bodies, improved fuel injection, revised intake funnels and more, resulting in a smoother, fatter powerband with three more horsepower at 13,000 rpm.

To channel that power, a new, fully-adjustable inverted fork with 41mm tubes was added for the most precise handling possible. It was too good a place to resist mounting powerful new 310mm front disc brakes, radial calipers and a radial master cylinder to even further exploit the R6's amazing front-end feel. The added rigidity of the new fork led to a redesign of the main frame to accommodate new rear suspension linkage.

New for 2005
- Engine upgrades in the form of 40mm throttle bodies, revised fuel injection and ignition mapping, new camshafts and intake funnels, etc., all result in a 3-horsepower increase at the same rpm as before with more power across the board.
- New, fully adjustable inverted fork with 41mm tubes further reinforces R6's main strength: precise handling. New, cast top triple clamp and forged lower clamp also increase rigidity, and work with revised handlebar positioning.
- To complement the new fork, the rear section of the Deltabox III main frame was revised internally to work with revised swingarm linkage and mounts for improved handling.
- Lighter, 310mm front brake discs replace 298mm units. New radial-mount four-piston calipers and radial master cylinder provide greater braking power and feel.
- 120/70-ZR17 front tire replaces previous 120/60-ZR17 for improved handling.
- Twin, ring-type radiator fans are now used to ensure optimal engine cooling.
- Revised headlight lens and revised under-cowl for even better style.

Ducati Monster

Great news for Monster fans! The Monster range for 2005 has doubled in size. The Monster S4R, a real naked superbike dedicated to the most demanding Ducati fans, will be joined by another just as mean, aggressive and exclusive Monster, the S2R. The arrival of the S2R heralds the birth of the SR family of Monsters, an innovative re-interpretation of the original Monster concept. And the S2R is not the only news in the Monster world. Fans of this unique motorcycle will be delighted to learn of the many developments that have taken place both in the 620 and 1000 models. The Monster Cromo is back, the bike made for riders who never want to go unnoticed. Great to look at, more than original, in fact quite unique, the Cromo will be available in a limited edition destined to command unlimited interest.

The Monster Family

Only one year after the launch of the S4R, the most powerful and exclusive Monster ever made, built using a large number of superbike components, a sister has appeared in the form of the S2R. The idea behind the S2R remains that of an exclusive, high performance motorcycle capable of defining the very concept of a naked sport. Built around a less extreme engine, the S2R nevertheless shares the same uncompromising components as the S4R, and is equipped with everything you need for an amazingly exciting ride. With the addition of the S2R, Ducati has created the SR family within the Monster range. Ducati's naked range, loved by tuners everywhere, has therefore expanded to offer more choices than ever before and to satisfy an even larger number of fans and enthusiasts of this great motorcycle. The SR Monsters at the top of the 2005 range are accompanied by other more classic models, continuing the evolutionary cycle begun over ten years ago. The 2005 range includes Ducati's most advanced 620 and 1000 cc power units. Both the 1000 and the 620 ranges are made up of three models each. The 620 range in particular now includes the Dark Monodisco model that carries the lowest price tag of all Monsters.



Monster S2R, S2R Dark

The tremendous success that the S4R has demonstrated the need for a new family of more sports oriented nakeds, stylistically and technologically advanced Monsters capable of delivering competition level performance. This is the ethos of the new Monster S2R, less extreme in terms of power but just as able to deliver all the excitement and fascination of its bigger sister. The engine selected for the entry level to this new family of Monsters is Ducati's air-cooled twin valve 803 cc twin. The colour schemes of this new Monster are highly recognisable and mirror the eye-catching graphics of the S4R. The S2R is available in 5 new colours: black, black with tangerine red stripe, acid yellow with black stripe, Ducati red with white stripe and tangerine red with black stripe

Style

New for 2005, the Monster S2R mirrors the overall design of the S4R. The only differences are those dictated by the presence of another kind of engine.

The choice of an air-cooled two-valve twin makes this latest Monster even more essential and sleek looking. Styling features the most exclusive solutions, like a twinned exhaust on the right side of the seat, and eye-catching colour schemes. The S2R comes in a choice of six different colours. Four of these reproduce the highly successful stripe down the mudguards and tank in different colour combinations. Classic Ducati red with white stripe is now backed up by black with tangerine red stripe, and acid yellow and tangerine red both with contrasting black stripes. Then there are two solid colours, black and matt black for the S 2R Dark. As with all Dark models the S2R Dark is the S2R with the lowest price tag and is also distinguishable by its level of equipment. The sports cockpit fairing and matching seat cover fitted to the other S2R models have been eliminated and the handlebars are conventional steel bars instead of variable section aluminium.

Chassis

If you buy a naked like the Monster S2R you expect the sort of performance promised by its highly aggressive lines. And the latest addition to the Monster family will certainly not disappoint. Its chassis is designed to perform well in all conditions, especially on the mixed, fast roads that represent the S2R's ideal terrain.

The two 300 mm front discs and the 245 single rear disc deliver all the power needed to guarantee reduced stopping distances. You can place absolute faith in the suspension too. The fork is a Marzocchi 43 mm upside down unit and there is an adjustable Sachs monoshock at the rear. This damps a single-sided aluminium swing arm that represents one of the most exclusive components of the Monster SR family.

Engine

The engine is no newcomer. The air cooled 800 twin has already been acclaimed for its effectiveness on the Monster and for the ideal compromise it offers between power, torque and fuel consumption. Electronic fuel injection and an exhaust catalyser combine to deliver plenty of smooth power while keeping emissions low and ensuring miserly fuel consumption. The S2R's power unit has also been enhanced by a major new innovation. For 2005 the S2R incorporates the APTC clutch already tried and tested to great effect on other recent Monster models. The new clutch reduces the lever strenght, in order to benefit all riders, particularly in town traffic. The greatest benefit is nevertheless felt when the bike is ridden with verve and hard downshifting. These are the conditions under which the anti-skid "slipper" system of the APTC clutch really makes itself felt, eliminating the annoying effects of reverse-acting torque that causes the rear wheel to bounce on the asphalt. Compared to the clutches fitted to the 620 Monsters, that of the S2R also incorporates dampers for smoother gear changes.

The PEGASO 650 STRADA's engine is a liquid cooled, four valve, single cylinder four stroke, equipped with the most advanced electronic fuel injection system currently available. The engine is designed for brilliant performance, low fuel consumption and, of course, extremely low emissions. The result is a machine that is fantastic to ride under all conditions.

The engine maintains Aprilia's traditional dry sump design. What makes it so exceptional is its compact overall dimensions and advanced technology. The engine's high power output (50 HP) is perfect for the PEGASO 650 STRADA's design concept, a concept that prioritises riding enjoyment. This powerful but flexible engine has an exceptional torque curve and accounts for the dual personality of the Aprilia PEGASO 650 STRADA: docile and relaxed for daily commuting and touring but mean and aggressive for sports riding.

The NEW PEGASO 650 STRADA has a healthy respect for the environment. Like all Aprilia motorcycles it incorporates standard-setting engine technology because fun and enjoyment should not spoil the environment. A double exhaust catalyser keeps emissions within the latest Euro 2 standards.

CHASSIS

Efficiency can go hand in hand with simplicity. A compact, single spar, steel frame is the perfect backbone for a thoroughbred supermotard like the NEW PEGASO 650 STRADA. Despite its extremely light weight, this frame delivers standard-setting rigidity as well as easy access for maintenance purposes.

Great care has been taken over suspension calibration to combine road holding and comfort. The NEW PEGASO 650 STRADA is equipped with a robust fork with the largest diameter stanchions in its class (45 mm). Wheel travel is 140 mm. This fork provides the best possible compromise between easy riding, braking control and comfort. A robust anti-twist bridge helps make the front end even more rigid and imparts a feeling of solid reliability unequalled by any other bike.

The gas-filled monoshock at the rear is adjustable in spring preload and rebound. It too is calibrated for maximum control under sports riding conditions without penalising versatility. Rear wheel travel is 130 mm.

The PEGASO 650 STRADA's elegant aluminium alloy wheels copy the wheel design of the RSV 1000 R Factory supersports for an even more aggressive look. Wide rimmed wheels and large, road-going tyres (110/70 at the front, 160/60 at the rear) provide plenty of support for the Pegaso's refined chassis. Great tyre grip and an extended area of ground contact guarantee a sensational ride in total safety.

The wheel spindles are 20 mm in diameter but hollow for greater strength and reduced weight.

BRAKES

Absolutely nothing has been overlooked, and only the best available components have been used. The Brembo front brake features a mighty 320 mm floating disk with a four-pot calliper, for the sort of braking power and control normally only found on supersport machines.

This powerful front brake is assisted by a 240 mm disk with a Brembo floating two-pot calliper at the rear.

The entire braking system has been calibrated for maximum efficiency, power, response, and feel.

- Complete, sports style, analog/digital instrumentation to provide the rider with all possible information. Yamaha presents their latest monster creation - the MT-1 - at the Intermot in Munich no longer as a concept like in Tokyo but as a fully grown production motorcycle. While the bike will be available on the European market in 2005, we over here in the USA will have to wait another year befor we can get our hands on the brand new machine. "I came to work for Yamaha because they always do things differently" tells Tsuyoshi, product planning manager for the European market. In today's hectic world, for many people it is more and more difficult to find the time to ride their motorcycle.

"My dream was to create a sportsbike for a kind of full time enjoyment, right out of your garage." he continues, "the development of higher power and less weight on the latest supersport machines is fine, however more people find it increasingly difficult to find suitable traffic conditions for these bikes.

As an alternative, we wanted to create a kind of 'maximum-taste' sportsbike.

We headed off with creating and testing a riding proto type to check all the functional options of our idea. With the task team being quite positve the second step was to test the market response to our new concept: the Tokyo Show model amazed and we got very inspiring feedback from all sides. This marked the start of the production model development.

That is something you can enjoy both for relaxed and for aggressive riding, and in this way your whole ride will be full time enjoyment, from the moment you leave your garage to the moment maybe 3 hours later when you put it back inside: you will have had 3 hours of full time enjoyment."

"Only, the difficulty with a long-stroke engine design is the engine height. But by utilising a pushrod valve operation system we could solve this problem." Indeed, the cylinder heads are very low and compact: there are no overhead camshafts to take space above the cylinders. In this way it is possible to fit the engine into the aluminium frame.

Third generation big twin

Purpose-built new engine: Yamaha spares no effort

This basic engine design made its debut in the Wild Star and was modified for Yamaha's flagship power cruiser, the Warrior 1700, where it got rave reviews for its performance and character. But to function in MT-01's sportier concept, Yamaha overhauled it completely with 3 main goals:

- Performance increase
- Significantly lighter weight
- Increased rigidity for sports riding.

The engineers made such a thorough job of this, that 90% of the major components of the MT-01 engine are new as compared to Warrior! "We can say that it's a new engine almost."

PERFORMANCE UP

To create this new 'high output' engine, the engineers made the following essential developments:

1. Cam profile
The camshaft profile has been redesigned for strong torque and a very wide powerband

2. Fuel injec tion system with special injectors
-
The fuel injectors are equipped with a 12-hole system (instead of the common 4 holes) for a very fine fuel spray and optimised combustion

3. EXUP system

- The engine is equipped with Yamaha's patented EXUP system to further increase the torque. EXUP is a system that operates a valve in the exhaust collector in relation to the engine rpm-range. For optimal exhaust efficiency you need a wider exhaust diameter at higher rpm as compared to lower rpm and that is exactly what the EXUP system does: it reduces the diameter at lower rpm
- The whole system is made out of titanium to keep the weight as low as possible

4. Variable air intake system
-
A similar optimization as the EXUP is used on the intake side, where a valve system regulates the air intake diameter of the airbox just before the air filter. This keeps the airflow and air intake speed always at an optimum level, for the best throttle response

5. Lighter Crank weight
- The crank weight is reduced by 2 kilograms to create an instant engine response and a very direct feeling

6. Increased conrod bearing size
- To withstand the engine's higher performance level, the big-end bearing size was increased from 53 to 57 mm diameter

7. Oil tank
- The oil tank is styled as a part of the engine and to keep oil temperatures lower it is mounted at the front side, where it is exposed to the cool airstream when riding

LIGHT WEIGHT

The incredible effort Yamaha's engineers made is shown by the fact that total engine weight was reduced by an amazing 20 kilograms! All parts have been scrutinized for weight-optimization and the whole transmission system got a new layout with the drive axle moved to the other side of the engine. Also items around the engine have a high tech lightweight construction: for example the EXUP system and the mufflers are made out of titanium.

Engine-Chassis mounting

It has been deeply analysed how to perfectly integrate the engine and the frame to achieve the best pulse feeling and the best chassis feedback. Yamaha testriders tried many different prototypes to find the optimum rigidity!
Their expertise showed in the comments from Yamaha own staff who rode the bike for the first time:

"The handling is amazing, you can change side exactly like you want, it's not too sharp, not too heavy, you don't feel like you need an effort. The brakes are amazing too. Without any effort the response is so quick that the bike feels like a light weight."

Additional mountings have been added at the cylinder heads, for a stronger connection to the frame. And a specially designed subframe reinforces the engine's structural rigidity for stronger feedback to the rider.

"The chassis of this machine had to perform like a top sport bike", states Tsuyoshi. "So all components are based on latest supersport technologies: upside-down front fork, fully adjustable suspensions, Brembo radial brake pump, radial brake calipers, R1-type swingarm, everything."

Especially the construction of the frame was a key issue.

"We had to create a very rigid and lightweight frame. However, from styling point of view we wanted to keep the engine as the dominant part, so the frame should not become too big. That's why we used Yamaha's latest 'Controlled-Filling die cast' technology of Yamaha, to be completely free to shape the frame in the way we wanted it."

Indeed, this technology does not need to use the big aluminium plates or beams that are common on traditional aluminium frames. Instead, it uses high vacuum levels to allow the casting of large, complex and lightweight structures with thin walls. This will make the frame very compact besides being rigid.

"To achieve the design of the concept model, the chassis had to have a very 'tight fit' around the engine and without the CF technology, that could not have been achieved" Tsuyoshi is convinced.
The second advantage of this technology is: there is no welding on the frame, which makes the looks very clean. This top spec frame is complemented by the beautiful R1-style aluminium swing arm for top level road holding.

"For this feature we deliberately chose a different approach than for the Tokyo show model, which used a beautifully designed, but in function compromised swingarm. For MT-01 the target was uncompromised function. Thus, the whole swingarm and suspension combination is based on the latest supersports technology!"

Design

Performance and beauty go hand in hand on the revolutionary RSV 1000 R. Lower and more compact than ever, the bike's aggressive look tells it as it is. This is no stylistic exercise. On the RSV 1000 R design is at the service of technology and performance. Everything about the bike is not just pretty, but pretty effective too! The entire bike has been designed to ensure that the V60 Magnesium engine can breath correctly. The ram air scoop has been placed right in the middle of the cockpit fairing where dynamic pressure is greatest and represents a perfect example of how stylish design can serve the purposes of performance. Likewise, the headlight cluster comprises four separate lights that work in pairs, eliminating the lopsided 'Cyclops' look of so many modern sports bikes and providing excellent lighting at the same time.

The RSV 1000 R is incredibly compact, but still boasts the top level ergonomics that have always characterised the RSV range. Its slender tail is extremely compact and one of the most striking design features of the bike. It also quickly converts from a solo to a dual seat (optional). Despite its compact size, the red LED, white-lens tail light is extremely bright so the RSV 1000 R is immediately recognisable even from behind. The quest for perfect aerodynamics has led to the elimination of conventional direction indicators. The front indicators are now incorporated in the rear view mirrors while the rear indicators are built into the tail. For 2005, the direction indicator lenses are white in colour (except USA models).

The new-design indicators leave nothing to stick out and spoil the RSV 1000 R's clinically clean lines. The bike therefore cuts through the air like nothing else. Extensive wind tunnel testing has shown that the RSV 1000 R has a CX of only 0.3. Ride it to believe it!

V60 Magnesium Engine

The 1000 cc 'V 60 Magnesium' engine marks a turning point in the history of Aprilia twin-cylinder engines. It is based on the acclaimed V990, but has been so completely revised that even its name has changed. Its design features have already established it as the benchmark for production twins. It performs exceptionally, responds in every situation and has proverbial Aprilia reliability. The cylinder heads have been designed using Aprilia's race know-how to improve fluid dynamics and combustion efficiency. Optimised ignition and injection mapping has also led to increased torque in the 4,000 to 6,000 rpm rev range. The valve gear has been designed and tuned for the maximum performance.

The V60 Magnesium breathes through the exclusive 'Air Runner' ram air scoop. As mentioned above, this is located right in the middle of the cockpit fairing, exactly on the motorcycle's centreline where dynamic pressure is the highest. From the scoop, an air duct passes through the steering head to take ram air to the generous 10.3 litre airbox. A choke inside the duct, controlled by the engine ECU, regulates flow to provide the engine with air at exactly the right volume and pressure for all engine speeds. The engine therefore packs incredible punch right through its extended speed range, enabling the rev limiter to be set at 11,000 rpm.

The mighty roar of the V60 Magnesium is muffled by two differential volume Helmotz resonators to reduce intake noise at the most critical engine speeds. The airbox also houses an idling motor. This operates an electronically controlled valve that deviates air downstream of the butterfly valve to make it easier to start the engine from cold and to stabilise engine idling.

The Air Runner also performs a structural function. It incorporates two lightweight aluminium arms to hold the cockpit fairing and headlight so that there is no need for ugly brackets. A new panel type air filter reduces pressure drop and improves engine efficiency. The engine's fuel injection system features 57 mm throttle bodies and one injector per cylinder. Thank to the Air Runner ram air scoop pressure in the airbox increases as the bike accelerates, leading to a 3% gain in power at maximum speed.

An engine management unit made in conjunction with Siemens VDO controls all engine parameters. The ECU receives real time signals from 15 parameter sensors and processes these to control the actuators in real time too. (Parameters include air and coolant temperature; atmospheric, airbox and oil pressure; Lambda sensor oxygen level; crankshaft, camshaft, and rear wheel speed; throttle, side stand, clutch and neutral position; and battery voltage.) To ensure high precision engine management, the phonic wheel on the crankshaft is a 36-minus-2-tooth wheel that generates signals every 10° instead of every 60°.

The flash EPROM already contains racing mapping for unrestricted exhausts. Aprilia service engineers can easily change mapping on request from the customer.

All engine data passes through a CAN (Controlled Area Network) line to the instrument panel, which acts as a diagnostic terminal. In the event of a malfunction, it is a simple job for service engineers to identify problems. The CAN line uses only two wires to transmit all data. This simplifies the electrical system enormously as well as reducing the total weight of the bike.

The V60 Magnesium engine sets new standards for production twins, delivering a maximum power of 138.72 hp (102 kW) at 9,500 rpm with a maximum torque of 107 Nm at 7,500 rpm. Despite this massive power the engine is extremely clean running and complies with the EC's Euro2 emission control legislation thanks to a three way catalytic converter with lambda probe oxygen sensor. The engine is extremely light too thanks to the use of high-tech materials like magnesium in the cylinder head covers and the clutch cover.

For Aprilia, advanced technology means long lasting performance as well as high performance. As the RSV 1000 R has grown in power, so it has also improved in reliability. Special high strength con rods have now been added to make the engine more robust than ever. Aprilia was the first manufacturer to use a close ratio gearbox on a production bike. The RSV 1000 R's new close ratio box allows you to make full use of the V60 Magnesium engine's fantastic power more easily than ever before. The result is even more aggressive acceleration and exhilarating gear changes coming out of bends. This enhanced performance is perfect for road and track because the engine responds brilliantly even in the high gears, making the bike sportier and more fun to ride than ever.

Despite so much technical evolution, the characteristics that made the original RSV stand out are still there.

The RSV 1000 R's sophisticated twin cylinder engine also incorporates the following exclusive Aprilia patents:

- AVDC (Anti Vibration Double Countershaft).
- Hydraulic action clutch with radial master cylinder assisted by the patented PPC (Pneumatic Power Clutch) system to control rear wheel bounce during fierce braking.

Exhaust System

The exhaust system is designed using all of Aprilia's Superbike championship experience. The system is a 2 into 1 into 2 exhaust made entirely in stainless steel, with 10/10 mm thick collectors and oval section cylinder head flanges in precision cast stainless steel. The silencer skins are in electroplated 8/10 mm stainless steel, and are assembled with straps and rivets in line with the latest racing practice. Even the location of the silencers has been specially calculated to minimize aerodynamic resistance and improve weight distribution. For 2005, the RSV 1000 R also features improved joints between the collector pipes and the silencers and shot-peened, satin-effect silencer ends.

Frame

Years of high level racing have allowed Aprilia's R&D section to design a frame that is acknowledged as the best production bike frame around. One of Aprilia's fixed objectives when designing the new RSV 1000 R frame was to achieve perfectly centralised mass. In line with Aprilia practice, the frame incorporates aluminium-silicon castings and Peraluman 450 pressings. The frame has been optimised by extensive finite element analysis and boasts excellent torsional rigidity though it weighs only 9,650 grams, a figure matched only by specialist racing frames.

Times change; riding styles change; and bikes must change too. For this reason, the frame and swingarm have been specifically designed for maximum efficiency and to enable riders to achieve perfect control over power slides into and out of bends. The new RSV 1000 R swingarm has been designed using the know how acquired in motorcycle GPs. Like the frame, it is made from extruded Peraluman and Al Si 7 castings. Its double member design provides a clear passage for the new twin silencer exhaust system. Here too, cross-sections and wall thicknesses have been optimised using finite element analysis. The RSV 1000 R swingarm weighs only 4,860 grams, well under the swingarm weight benchmark of 5 kg.

Suspension

The Showa 43 mm upside down fork is a perfect compromise between sports performance and road-going comfort. It is derived from racing forks and provides continuous adjustment for preload as well as hydraulic adjustments for compression and rebound damping (2.25 turns for the former and 2.5 for the latter).

The Sachs rear monoshock incorporates a separate piggy back nitrogen cylinder and is adjustable in preload, compression, rebound and even length so that the rear end of the bike can be raised or lowered to achieve whatever setup may be required and to match rider preferences and other suspension adjustments.

Brakes

Top supersports demand top quality brakes. The RSV 1000 R is at the cutting edge of technology, with radial calliper front brakes developed by Aprilia in conjunction with Brembo. Aprilia is no newcomer to sophisticated radial calliper technology. In fact Aprilia was the first manufacturer to use it, on a 250 GP racer.

The benefits of radial callipers for the rider are:

- More effective braking.
- More precise response to rider input. Wasted lever movement due to calliper 'elasticity' is almost completely eliminated because radial mounting prevents any movement of the calliper itself.
- Longer pad life. Radial callipers ensure better pad to disk alignment because the calliper remains rigidly aligned with its theoretical working position even under extreme stress. Better pad alignment means more even surface wear and therefore longer pad life.
- More consistent braking with less variation in performance between hot and cold.

The 320 mm floating steel disks on the front wheel feature narrower braking surfaces. This means reduced wheel weight and inertia and therefore more agile handling. The 2005 RSV 1000 R's radial callipers are combined with a radial master cylinder to form the most sophisticated braking system fitted to any current production bike. The front and rear braking circuits both use aeronautical metal braid hoses to eliminate the pressure variations associated with conventional rubber brake lines, guaranteeing maximum braking precision.

Components

What places the Aprilia RSV 1000 R in a class of its own is the care taken in its design and manufacture and the attention paid to every single component on the bike. The result is increased performance and functionality, with reduced weight and a quality and finish that no other bike can equal.

Particular care has been taken to rationalise the RSV 1000 R's design. Fewer parts means fewer screws and less weight. The new RSV 1000 R has only 14 fairing and body parts. Even the fastenings have been designed in a wind tunnel to optimise air flow over the bike and improve CX and cooling.

The following components deserve a special mention:

- Radial calliper front brakes.

- Cast-formed calliper mounting for improved rigidity and braking consitency.

- The combined digital and analog dashboard receives data on all engine control parameters over a CAN line and incorporates memory to allow it to act as an integral part of the self-diagnostics system. The dashboard provides the same readouts as the previous model (including a self timer with a 40 lap memory). The dashboard is extremely modern and compact in design and weighs only 220 grams. All functions are controlled by three conveniently located keys. The LED backlighting may be set to three levels and is white for the analog instruments and red for the digital display.

- The headlight cluster incorporates four lights for perfect night riding vision. The great care taken over the design and finish of the RSV 1000 R also transpires from little but important details like bulb holders made from blue anodised aluminium.

- The white lens direction indicators are fully integrated in the bike's body. The front indicators are moulded into the rear view mirrors while the rear indicators are built into the tail. This means that there is no need to remove them for track use. The rear number plate holder can also be removed quickly and easily to comply with competition regulations.

- Even the ignition key is specially made for the RSV 1000 R and carries an internal identification code. The ignition block has an immobilizer fitted as standard.

Colors

The RSV 1000 R features eye-catching new graphics in Aprilia Black, Fluo Red and Mirror Silver. The real news, however, is the brand new graphic on the fairing. A stylised lion symbolises Aprilia's origins, the history of Venice and the history of Aprilia itself. (The lion was one of Aprilia's first logos.) The lion represents exotic places, fearless character, and sporting courage. More than just a graphic, the lion is part of art itself and a universally recognised symbol.

HUSQVARNA SM 450R Supermoto





To celebrate 100 years of success, Husqvarna brought a new sense of style to track bikes unveiling a masterpiece, the TE 510 Centennial. The new SM 450-510 R are direct descendants of the Centennial and have that same unmistakeable style but now emphasised by new bodywork and colour-coded fittings.

The fuel tank, saddle, side panels, number holders, headlamp grille and mudguards are the same style as the TE 510 and give these new 4-stroke DOHC bikes an exciting new appeal. There are three colour schemes: The classic Husqvarna yellow/blue race colours, red/white like the Centennial model and black.

The work by the Husqvarna team however was not just a re-styling makeover. The SM version 4- stroke engines were significantly modified to increase both power output and reliability. The new engines have larger stem titanium valves to increase durability even under the hardest use.

The leading edge technology used to make these valves came from a supplier that is one of the leaders in the world of car racing.

The new profile SM 450/510 inlet camshaft optimises performance working in conjunction with new valve seating arrangements.

A new multi layered steel (MLS) head gasket minimises deformation caused by tightening and provides even heat distribution throughout the engine.

The latest generation 41 mm Keihin MX carburettors have been fitted to all 4-stroke models.

These new carburettors have been specially calibrated for Husqvarna to provide improved fuel flow under all types of use. Cold starting and hot engine re-starting problems are now a thing of the past thanks to the double action COLD/HOT starter button.

The engines all have electric starters. The electrics system is fitted with a safety device to prevent accidental starting whether the bike is in neutral or in gear.

Primary transmission on the 450 engine is now the same as on the 510 with a very strong aluminium (Ergal) machined clutch basket with hard anodic oxidation coating to improve clutch plate slide and reduce wear on the contact surfaces.

New features are a new crankshaft on the 450 with con-rod pin diameter increased from 30 to 34 mm, a new roller bearing with increased load capacity and silvered bearing shells, a redesigned con rod and different crankshaft balancing to reduce vibration.

Significant reworking to the electrical system was also carried out.

The digital CPU is programmable and recognizes both throttle position (TPS) and individual gear selection (GPS).

Ignition timing was modified to make starting easier and a new alternator has an improved battery re-charging that allows improved charging even from low revs.

The high-resistance rivet less flywheel on the TC 450/510 models is perfectly suited to the very abrupt torque changes required by motocross use.

Further work was carried out with the intention of reducing overall weight and improving manoeuvrability, as these elements are especially important on a motocross machine. Particular attention was paid to the suspension and brakes and many new improvements were incorporated. It was for this reason that all the new models were fitted with Sachs shock absorbers with a topout spring that improves suspension function mainly during rebound, and especially whilst under hard braking by minimising the bouncing often found in deceleration.

The shock absorber seals and chamber were also re-designed to improve cooling.

The lower shock absorber hinge featuring a roller bearing is also new.

All the rear suspension link needle bearings are now longer to reduce friction and improve durability.

Suspension settings have been modified as a result of tests by Husqvarna motocross team riders.

The new Brembo brake system features a floating 4-caliper 320 mm front disc.
