The 2009 Mercedes CL550 on the North American market will receive the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system as standard equipment, as announced by Mercedes. The 2009 Mercedes CL550 4MATIC equipped with a seven-speed automatic transmission, and it may develops 382 hp and 391 lb.-ft of torque.

Mercedes-Benz CL550 Leads Industry Trend with AWD for 2009

The luxurious 2009 CL550 coupe (382 hp, 391 lb.-ft) will receive the latest version of the Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC all-wheel drive system as standard equipment. As modern all-wheel-drive systems become even more refined, they are increasingly popular, especially in the luxury car market. With negligible weight and fuel-efficiency trade-offs, full-time all-wheel-drive systems provide year-round traction and stability benefits on both wet and dry roads.

The V8-powered 518hp CL63 AMG and the V12-powered 510 hp CL600 and 604 hp CL65 AMG models will continue with rear-wheel-drive powertrain. The 2009 CL line goes on sale in the summer of this year.

The Latest 4MATIC System

The latest 4MATIC system features a new-generation full-time all-wheel-drive system that’s integrated into the seven-speed automatic transmission. Having made its debut on the new-generation 2007 S-Class sedan, the system fits right into the standard CL body and utilizes the existing front suspension (gone are the special suspension parts and wider transmission tunnel that were necessary on earlier 4MATIC systems). The extra gears and shafts that drive the front wheels now weigh only 154 pounds more than the rear-wheel-drive model. Beginning from the right side of the transmission tail section, a driveshaft powers a front final drive and differential unit just to the right of the engine oil pan. The axle shaft for the left front wheel passes through a tube that’s encapsulated in the engine oil pan.

Improved Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency has been improved, due to a number of innovative measures that minimize the energy needed to turn the extra all-wheel-drive shafts and gears. In particular, only two gears now power the front driveshaft (instead of the previous three), and the direction of rotation is cleverly corrected in the front final drive without additional gears. Recessing the universal joint for the front driveshaft into the transmission output gear also saved space, helping to fit the entire drive system into the standard body shell.

Like the S-Class sedan, the CL550 4MATIC coupe comes with a multi-plate clutch tucked into the center differential that provides the extra traction benefits of a limited-slip diff while complementing its four-wheel traction control. Often called a “breakaway” clutch, the multi-plate unit helps provide power equally to the front and rear wheels when driving straight ahead, but still allows the front wheels to rotate faster in turns. While four-wheel traction control reacts after wheel slippage is sensed, the clutch helps prevent slippage.

4MATIC Cars Get Rear-Biased Torque Distribution

Under normal conditions, Mercedes sport utility vehicles distribute torque nearly equally between the front and rear wheels. However, 4MATIC-equipped Mercedes-Benz cars come with a planetary gear set within the center differential that begins with 45-55 percent front-to-rear torque distribution. To skilled drivers, this rear-bias all-wheel-drive system feels much like rear-wheel-drive cars, in which subtle throttle-steering effects can enhance handling, especially in spirited driving.

Mercedes-Benz has been building four-wheel-drive commercial vehicles since 1907 – a full 100 years of experience with all-wheel drive. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system made its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985, and Mercedes-Benz launched 4MATIC-equipped passenger cars in the U.S. market for the 1989 model year. PRE-SAFE® Brake Can Automatically Apply Partial Emergency Braking

The launch of the current CL coupe marked the debut of another revolutionary Mercedes-Benz safety feature – PRE-SAFE® brake. The company that invented SRS, the crumple zone, ABS anti-lock brakes, traction control and ESP stability control also launched PRE-SAFE on the S-Class sedan in 2002. On the latest CL, PRE-SAFE, in combination with the Distronic Plus system, now also comes with the ability to automatically apply partial braking in certain types of emergencies.

Standard on all CL coupe models, the revolutionary PRE-SAFE® system automatically tightens the front seat belts during the valuable seconds just before a possible impact, and the front passenger seat moves to a position that can provide better protection. And, if the system senses an impending rollover, the sunroof closes as well.

Side windows also close to provide better support for the window curtain air bags, and special seat cushions can inflate to provide greater lateral support for occupants and to help the side air bags provide even better collision protection.

Distronic Plus Helps in Stop-and-Go Traffic

In the latest CL coupe line, the well-known Distronic cruise control feature that maintains a pre-set following distance behind the vehicle ahead is replaced by an optional “Distronic Plus” system. Integrated with the latest PRE-SAFE, the latest radar-based system operates at nearly all speeds up to 125 mph and can be especially helpful in stop-and-go traffic. Newly developed short-range radar sweeps the first 33 yards in a fan-shaped 80-degree pattern, working in tandem with a narrower nine-degree beam of longer-range radar.

The two radar frequencies complement each other to cover a full range of more than 160 yards – more than 1½ football fields. During approval of the new 24-gigahertz radar frequency, government agencies cited its potential to improve traffic safety, reduce injuries and ultimately save lives.

Blind Spot Alert Also Helps Make Driving Less Stressful

As a new option in conjunction with Distronic Plus, a blind spot alert system monitors those hard-to-see areas in adjacent lanes, to help make changing lanes safer and, in general, make driving less stressful. What’s more, when other vehicles enter the blind spots on either side of the CL coupe, a red warning light embedded in the outside mirror alerts the driver. And, if the driver doesn’t notice the warning and operates the turn signal as a prelude to changing lanes, the system then blinks the mirror warning light and sounds an alarm.

The blind spot alert system uses six short-range radar sensors (four in the rear bumper and two in the front) to sense overtaking vehicles as well as vehicles that have already been passed. Monitoring the zone to the side and rear on the left and right, the blind spot alert system works at any speed above 18 mph.

Radar-Based Park Assist

Distronic Plus also incorporates radar-based Park Assist that provides a warning tone and a visual readout of the distance to adjacent parked vehicles. This option utilizes the same radar sensors mounted in the bumpers, and its clean look replaces the visible “portholes” of the previous ultrasonic-based system.

An optional rear view camera also helps makes reverse parking easier and safer. Whenever reverse is engaged, a camera hidden just above the license plate displays the area behind the car on the COMAND screen, and lines that change with steering input are shown on the display to assist the driver in parking maneuvers.

Brake Assist Now Teams Up With Distronic Plus

In the early 1990s, Mercedes-Benz engineers conducting simulator tests discovered that many drivers don’t push the brake pedal hard enough in emergency braking, a discovery that led to the development of Brake Assist, standard equipment on all Mercedes-Benz vehicles since late 1990s. Brake Assist has proven itself a million times, and tests show vehicles equipped with Brake Assist are involved in 26 percent fewer accidents.

On the latest CL coupe, an enhanced version of the Mercedes-Benz Brake Assist system not only supplies braking assist in emergencies as soon as the driver applies the brake pedal, but also measures the distance to the vehicle ahead (thanks to Distronic Plus) and adjusts brake pressure if the driver doesn’t brake hard enough. While Brake Assist is only triggered by the driver’s reaction on the brake pedal, Brake Assist Plus also considers the closing speed of the vehicle ahead based on radar signals from the Distronic Plus system.

In extensive tests conducted by Mercedes researchers using 300 drivers, the integrated system reduced rear collisions in heavy city traffic by 75 percent. During testing, data recorders and video cameras documented more than 250,000 real-world miles covered by 200 drivers in the U.S. and Europe, while 100 drivers participated in months of intense testing on the DaimlerChrysler driving simulator in Berlin.

Infra-Red Night View Assist

Another innovative technology on the CL coupe is optional Night View Assist, which can extend the driver’s ability to see ahead to nearly 500 feet. In contrast to passive systems that rely on thermal imaging, this active system bathes the road ahead with invisible infra-red light from two projector beams mounted in the headlights. An infra-red camera discreetly mounted in the windshield receives the reflected images and displays them in a high-resolution display in the instrument cluster. The result is akin to a highly detailed black & white video image.

Powered by a 3.2L V6 FSI engine, the new Audi Q5 developing 265hp and 243 lb-ft of torque between 3000-5000 rpm.

The Audi Q5 has a drag coefficient of 0.33, and it is 4.63 meters long, 1.88 meters wide and 1.65 meters (5.41 feet) high.

However, the Audi Q5 will be the first Ingolstadt model to be equipped with a Generation 3 MMI, and navigation with real-time traffic information. With the specifications above, the Audi Q5 price will be around 30,000 pounds mark for the UK market.

The sportiest SUV in its class is dynamic, multifunctional and comfortable.

The dimensions alone indicate that this is a SUV of all-new proportions. Measuring 4.63 meters (15.19 feet) long and 1.88 meters (6.17 feet) wide, the Audi Q5 is just 1.65 meters (5.41 feet) high – making it sportier than any of its competitors. What’s more, this SUV sets another benchmark in its class with a low drag coefficient of 0.33.

With its sporty elegance and artfully sculpted forms, the design of the Audi Q5 is perfectly in tune with the character of Audi as a brand. Long wheelbase, roomy interior

At 2.81 meters (9.22 feet), the wheelbase is the longest in its segment – creating a roomy interior on board the Audi Q5. The vehicle comfortably accommodates five persons in ergonomically designed seats that can be flexibly arranged. The backrests for the rear seats are angle-adjustable and especially easy to fold down by activating the remote release lever in the luggage compartment. This compartment, offering access to a second storage area under the floor, then expands from 540 to 1,560 liters (19.07 to 55.09 cubic feet) in volume.

The Audi Q5 is a multi-talent for sport, leisure-time and family activities. As an option, Audi offers the “rear bench seat plus”, which slides 100 millimeters (3.94 inches) lengthwise to provide a load-through facility. Strong and efficient – the engine

The Audi Q5 is rolling off the production line for the USA in one engine/transmission combination: the fuel efficient 3.2 FSI six cylinder engine with fast-shifting Tiptronic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The pioneer of all-wheel drive, Audi builds the Audi Q5 standard with quattro permanent all-wheel drive – the only logical solution for a dynamic SUV. In normal running conditions, the transfer case distributes the power to the front and rear axle in a 40:60 ratio for a rear-focused style that enhances driving pleasure. When needed, the quattro driveline can deliver up to 65 percent of the power to the front axle and a maximum of 85 percent to the rear axle.

The running gear in the Audi Q5 further emphasizes its sporty nature. Elaborated by the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, the new car re-affirms the brand’s excellence in this sector, as shown by some Spider’s being regarded among the most beautiful cars in global automotive history. Cars such as the Giulietta Spider from the 50’s or the legendary Duetto made famous by �The Graduate� from 1967 with a young Dustin Hoffman. Today, it’s the Alfa 8C Spider’s turn to take centre stage and project into the future the values of technology and emotion which belong to the Alfa Romeo legacy.

Obviously, the new vehicle inherits all the winning features of the Coup� version. Starting with the two �sport seats� setup and the fascinating exterior lines, which characterized by sculpted and finely designed bodywork, �dress� the automotive and mechanical excellence of the model.

In detail, the marked dynamics of the vehicle are highlighted by the horizontal groove �built� into the bonnet at wheel level. The oversize wheels and powerful �muscles� of the rear mudguard accentuate the personality and force of the model, without diminishing the elegance of those fluid lines. Instead they highlight the formal beauty of the singular external features: the �teardrop� fog lights set like a precious jewel in the front mudguard, the front Led lights, a synthesis of technology and rationality, and the essential door handle.

Furthermore, in the front we can find the characteristic Alfa Romeo stylings, with a new interpretation of the �whiskers� and shield. Without forgetting, that this innovative range anticipates the elements and proportions of the future Alfa Romeo cars, always with complete respect for the historical legacy of the brand.

It’s worth underlining that to reach these top levels of aero-dynamic efficiency, solutions which don’t limit themselves to the design of the form have been adopted on the Alfa 8C Spider. All the surfaces and profiles of the uprights and windows, together with the form and positioning of the rear-view mirrors, have been optimized using computer models and tests in wind tunnels and real-life environments. As a result, air flows round the vehicle following it’s natural path, unhampered by corners and irregularities. The end result is a negative LC (lift coefficient) which like competition vehicles, contributes to stability at high speeds. But the peculiarity of this vehicle, is the hooded top fitted with electro-hydraulic automatic control (controllable via a button on the dashboard). The hooded top of the Alfa 8C Spider is composed of two overlapping sheets: the external one is made with a multi-thread textile which can withstand the elements, whilst the interior has high sound-proofing qualities. Furthermore, the hooded roof-top, available in various colors, has been perfected aesthetically, aerodynamically and for acoustic comfort. It has also been perfected from a functional point of view, with specially developed film-reels to render more agile, rapid and secure any explanations of the functioning.

In the interior, the Alfa 8C Spider guarantees a sophisticated environment, thanks to the vast use of composite materials in the dashboard and internal panels, as well as the use of anatomical seats, produced in carbon fibers, that can be adjusted according to the physical characteristics of the driver (up to now, a feature only available to racing cars). Furthermore, for maximum possible personalization of the interior, the client can chose between different environments and aesthetic solutions. All distinguishable by the particular attention to detail and artisan workmanship: from the contrasting stitches, color tone and exclusive matchings. The bucket seats are upholstered in Frau flower leather (an exclusive and innovative treatment of the weave, in which the leather is bound to a natural fiber, creating a look of great visual impact).

In analogous fashion to the interior, the same care has been taken in realizing the exteriors: from the alloy wheels to the brake calipers, every detail can be chosen to your particular design, because every Alfa 8C Spider can only look similar to itself. An unmistakable car made to measure for the owner’s personality. The unique and un-repeatable Alfa 8C Spider announces the pleasure of a sporty drive with full respect for the brand’s legacy.

Like in the best Alfa Romeo tradition, hidden under this pretty �dress� is the best of what’s available in the field of mechanics and propulsions. Firstly, the Alfa 8C Spider has a rigid and light structure (the compact frame is made in steel for maximum torsion to guarantee a drive which is always precise and sure, whilst the body is in carbon fiber). We are dealing with a choice motivated by the need to reduce as much as possible the weight but also to optimize the centre of gravity for agility and drive-ability in the more demanding journeys.

Still under the banner of sophisticated technology, the Alfa 8C Spider adopts the new �8 cylinder mated to a 5-speed gearbox with 90�� and a capacity of 4691 cm3 which has been designed with one specific aim: guarantee extraordinary performances without relinquishing the fluidity of the gearshift or the ease of use in any driving context. Like so, a powerful and progressive propulsion is born with a top power of 450 CV at 7.000 rpm and a maximum torque of 7.500 rpm. This engine has been mated to a self-shifting 6-speed gearshift (with computerized selection of the gears via levers behind the steering-wheel), and a self-blocking differential unit.

As in the legendary Formula 1 vehicles from the 50’s, the Alfa 8C Spider sports the Transaxle design which guarantees the best equilibrium in the partioning of weight. The propulsion is placed in the rear whilst the gearshift is placed behind along the differential and hydraulic motor unit. The Transaxle design foresees a tight connection between motor and gearshift, which is fitted with a self-blocking differential. The two groups are linked by a tubular element, at the interior of which rotates the transmission driving shaft: in this manner the load is distributed in an optimal manner between the front and rear suspension.

So much power can only be entrusted to an excellent braking system: the Alfa 8C Spider is fitted with carbo-ceramic Brembo (CCM), 380 mm in diameter on the front-wheels and 360 mm on the back-wheels. This solution guarantees a powerful brake action even in the most intense uses. The marked reduction in weight, in comparison to a traditional set-up, reduces the masses unsupported by the vehicle and so improves the dynamic performance and driving comfort. Furthermore, the mono-block calipers guarantee maximum rigidity and minimal deformation, given the high loads generated by the pressure of the pistons on the brake-linings.

Therefore, the Alfa 8C Spider �declares itself Alfa� all the way, confirming control and driving pleasure with no compromises. Since always, gear comfort and dynamic performance are qualities specific to Alfa Romeo cars: in this case they have become veritable strong points. Thanks to for example, the suspensions which foresee a high wishbone suspension with brackets and uprights in forged aluminium, that act as a supplementary strut for alignment control.

Contributing also to the brilliant road control are specially developed 20� tyres to insure excellent performance, the tyres have a: 245/35 front-suspension and a rear-suspension of 285/35. Fitted on perforated rims in fluid moulded aluminium to ensure lightness and maximum brake ventilation efficiency. Lastly, the Alfa 8C Spider uses an evolved VDC Alfa Romeo traction and stability system, which ensures the driver feels at one with his car.

The Scuderia Bizzarrini P538 is designed by Stefan Schulze and it will have its first public viewing in November 2008 at the Nardo Ring. Sounds familiar with the name? Stefan Schulze also the designer of the Tribun Concept and the Panthera Concept from a while back.

Although his designs of Tribun Concept and Panthera Concept will probably never reach the production line, but the Scuderia Bizzarrini P538 will be built in a limited number.

Ford McRae Enduro Rally Car

The Ford McRae Enduro rally car won the Idea of the Year at this year’s Autocar Awards, and is dedicated to the late Colin McRae by the team behind it. The Ford McRae Enduro rally car is powered by a 2.7 liter V6 turbo diesel engine that develops 220 hp that are being transferred to the wheels through a six-speed manual ZF gearbox and a full-time four-wheel-drive system. The engine of the Ford McRae Enduro rally car was built at the Ford Dagenham Diesel Center in Essex.

The Ford McRae Enduro rally car has been tested for 12,000 km and will race for the first time at the Saudi Arabia Baja, in February next year.

The McRae Enduro rally car, powered by a Ford-assembled engine, has won the prestigious ‘Idea of the Year’ at the 2007 Autocar Awards, and been dedicated to the late Colin McRae by the team behind it.

The rally car, which will be competing in races including the 6,000 km cross-Saharan Dakar Rally, is powered by a 2.7�litre V6 turbo, 220 horsepower diesel engine built at the Ford Dagenham Diesel Centre in Essex.

The award was announced by Chas Hallett, Autocar’s editor to an audience of 480 global motor industry leaders and celebrities.

Receiving the award, Christopher Bibb, commercial director for the McRae Enduro operation based at Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex, said: “Rally driver Alister McRae, the younger brother of Colin, is our chief test driver.”

“As soon as testing started, Colin was keen to drive the Enduro, but for many reasons that never quite happened, and sadly now never will. We therefore dedicate our award to Colin McRae � one of Britain’s greatest sportsmen.”

Jeep Renegade Concept Car

The Jeep Renegade concept was displayed at the 2008 Detroit Motor Show. The Renegade concept is powered by a new electric drivetrain which Chrysler put in two other concepts shown at Detroit. The system is called ENVI, and in the Renegade concept it comprises of two 268 horsepower electric motors (one on each axle) powered by lithium ion batteries. This is backed up by a Bluetec diesel engine giving a combined mpg of 110 miles when used with the electric motors.

Constructed from environmentally responsible materials, sustainability is a key theme of the Jeep Renegade concept. The one-piece molded chassis was created without using environmentally-harmful resins, inside are soy-based foam seats, and the no-gloss exterior color of the Renegade’s lightweight composite body is molded in to avoid the use of solvents present in automotive paints.

The Jeep Renegade concept’s “one-with-nature” personality is emphasized by its large, flaring wheel openings, oversized wheels and tires, and cut-down speedster windshield.

Among the unique exterior details of the Renegade are “deconstructed” rubber-clad headlamps and taillamps, as well as elongated triangular openings in each of the two sculpted doors.

While the Jeep Renegade concept features a roll bar, it has no top. Audi has release the details and first photos of the new 2009 Audi RS6 sedan facelift. Powered by a twin-turbo 5.0 liter V10 engine, the 2009 Audi RS6 sedan facelift may develops 426 kW (580 hp) and 650 Nm of torque.

It drives like a supercar thanks to its superior performance and thrilling dynamics, yet offers all of the everyday utility of a large business sedan.

The engine of the new 2009 Audi RS6 is a high-tech work of art. The 4,991 cc V10 bundles a number of Audi’s race-winning technologies – FSI direct fuel injection, dry-sump lubrication and two turbochargers. With up to 1.6 bar of boost pressure, these provide smooth, powerful thrust and an incomparable power band: The peak torque of 650 Nm (479.42 lb-ft) is available from 1,500 to 6,250 rpm and thus nearly over the entire rev range. Peak power of 426 kW (580 hp) is generated between 6,250 rpm and the maximum figure of 6,700 rpm.

With a power-to-weight ratio of 3.4 kilograms per hp, the 2009 Audi RS6 performs like a supercar. It catapults to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.5 seconds on its way to an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph), which can be optionally raised to 280 km/h (173.98 mph). The V10 responds immediately and spontaneously to the throttle, and is very smooth while accelerating with a powerful roar.

The engine’s power flows through the six-speed tiptronic, one of a new, dynamic generation of Audi automatic transmissions. Its reaction time has been reduced to one tenth of a second, shift time has been halved compared to units used in other models and transmission ratios are short. The driver can also manually change gears either using the shift lever or the paddles on the steering wheel. The tiptronic transmission transfers the power to an extremely sporty, rear-weighted quattro drive train.

The electronic stabilization system ESP offers maximum driving fun with uncompromised safety. Its relatively high activation threshold encourages a dynamic driving style. It offers a Sport mode and can also be deactivated entirely.

The new 2009 Audi RS6 rolls on 19-inch alloy wheels shod with 255/40 tires. Up front, six-piston fixed aluminum calipers – painted black and decorated with RS badges – clamp down on 390 millimeter brake disks. The rear brake disks measure 365 millimeters in diameter. The rear axle features single-piston floating brake calipers. The floating steel disks feature large cooling ducts and axial perforations for enhanced performance and less weight.

9.5J x 20-inch wheels are offered as an option. These allow the use of a ceramic brake system. The 420 (front) and 356 (rear) millimeter disks weigh a total of 12.2 kilograms (26.90 lb) less than the steel disks. The calipers – up front with eight pistons – are painted anthracite and labeled “Audi ceramic.”

The body of the 4.93 meter (16.17 ft) RS 6 also sports a number of distinctive features that immediately identify it as a dynamic, top-of-the-line model. These include the single-frame grill, the air intakes, the headlights featuring xenon plus, adaptive light and RS 6-specific LED daytime running lights, the flared fenders and deep side skirts, the rear diffuser, the spoiler integrated into the trunk lid and the two large oval exhaust pipes.

Mitsubishi has released new photos and details of the 2008 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport that will be premiered at the Moscow Auto Salon.
