Chevrolet Fuel Economy Range Pickups and SUVs

Chevrolet has launched their fuel economy range of their full-size pickups and SUVs that includes the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado XFE, the 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe XFE, the GMC Sierra XFE and the GMC Yukon XFE.

The Chevrolet and GMC XFE - Xtra Fuel Economy - models are powered by a 5.3L V8 engine coupled with a six-speed transmission and offer a 15 city and 21 highway mileage ratings.

This engine is rated at 320 hp (238 kW) and 340 lb.-ft. of torque (461 Nm) in the Tahoe XFE and the Yukon XFE and at 315 hp/235 kW and 338 lb-ft/458 Nm in the Silverado XFE and the Sierra XFE.

General Motors is building on the segment-leading fuel economy of its full-size pickups and SUVs with new XFE models of the 2009 Chevy Silverado, Chevy Tahoe, GMC Sierra and GMC Yukon. The vehicles use a combination of mechanical, aerodynamic and mass-reducing enhancements to deliver a 5-percent increase in EPA-estimated highway fuel economy and more than 7-percent improved mileage in city driving.

The aero enhancements make Silverado XFE and Sierra XFE models the most aerodynamic full-size pickups in the industry, with a “Best in Class” 0.412 coefficient of drag (cd). The pickups join the Tahoe Hybrid and Yukon Hybrid as the most aerodynamic full-size SUVs at 0.349 (cd).

The new XFE – Xtra Fuel Economy – models reflect GM’s quick adaptation to an evolving market that remains a very important segment. They are available on 2WD vehicles equipped with the 5.3L V-8 and six-speed transmission. They achieve 15 city and 21 highway mileage ratings versus comparable non-XFE models’ 14/20 ratings.

Most importantly, the increased efficiency does not come at the expense of capability. Towing ratings for the Tahoe and Yukon are unchanged, while the Silverado and Sierra increase from 6,600 pounds (2,994 kg) to 7,000 pounds (3,175 kg) due to the new, six-speed transmission and high-capacity cooling package.

“We are pulling out all the stops to deliver a more efficient package for customers who need the capability of full-size pickups and SUVs and want the very best fuel economy,” said Gary White, GM North America vice president and vehicle line executive for full-size trucks. “Our pickups and SUVs are already the fuel economy leaders of their respective segments, but our engineers knew greater efficiency was achievable. We fast-tracked the XFE models to get them into dealer showrooms as quickly as possible.”

All models carry the XFE name badge and are offered in the LT trim for Silverado and LS and LT trims for Tahoe. Sierra XFE comes with SLE trim and Yukon XFE is offered with SLE and SLT trim. Most regular-production options for all models are available. Silverado XFE and Sierra XFE are offered in 2wd crew cab body styles only. Production begins this fall.

“In addition to the XFE models, GM already offers hybrid versions of the Tahoe and Yukon that achieve up to a 50-percent improvement in city fuel economy and coming in the first half of 2009 are the Silverado and Sierra Hybrids,” said White. “These hybrid pickups offer up to 25 percent overall increased fuel economy and greater than 40-percent improved mileage in city driving.”

XFE efficiencies

GM’s more efficient full-size pickups and SUVs are powered by a 5.3L FlexFuel V-8 (LC9) engine that’s built with a mass-reducing aluminum cylinder block and heads. It is rated at 320 horsepower (238 kW)* and 340 lb.-ft. of torque (461 Nm)* in Tahoe and Yukon and 315 hp/235 kW and 338 lb-ft/458 Nm in Silverado and Sierra. The engine is backed by a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission (with high-capacity cooling on Silverado and Sierra).

A rear axle equipped with a fuel-saving 3.08 ratio is also standard on all XFE models. Lightweight aluminum wheels and low rolling resistance tires (with higher tire pressure) also are included on all models.

Renault chose the Geneva Motor Show today to take the wraps off of its Megane Coupe Concept showcar, which previews a compact coupe to be released at a later date. Like its larger sister, Laguna Coupe Concept, which wowed the crowds in Frankfurt last September, it points to an evolution of more fluid, sportier styling from Renault.

The sleek and aggressive-looking Megane Coupe Concept targets drivers who are not only drawn by the notion of driving pleasure but who also seek to express their personality through their car. Megane Coupe Concept symbolises Renault’s vision of what a genuine compact sports coupe should deliver, namely character and dynamism, two traits epitomised by the opening and closing movement of its spectacular doors.

Distinctive looks that exude personality and dynamism

Megane Coupe Concept provides a foretaste of the forthcoming Megane Coupe. “This show car emphatically showcases the evolution at Renault Design. Its squatter proportions and powerful, energetic styling talk directly to the driver’s senses; they say ‘driving pleasure’. The spectacular, unprecedented door-opening kinematics add that little touch of magic which contributes to the dream factor associated with the automobile,” explains Renault’s Patrick Le Quement, Senior Vice President, Corporate Design.

From a total length of 4.51 metres, Megane Coupe Concept features a modern, dynamic silhouette with taut lines that seem to suggest perpetual movement, while its expressive frontal styling points to a truly dynamic personality. The juxtaposition of headlamp modules with aluminium-finish air-intakes also conveys an impression of fluidity and movement. The two rows of main and dipped beam lights sit on a crystal-like striated strip which fills the sidelight and daytime running light functions.

The headlamps use high-performance LEDs (light-emitting diodes) which are both long-lasting and extremely efficient. The foglamps also employ LED technology and blend harmoniously with the dynamic, front-end styling. The shoulder-lines flow along the curvaceous sides before culminating in a squat rear-end conveying power and movement.

The four independent tubes that make up the modern rear lights are housed in the bodywork and serve as a further illustration of the dynamic, technological spirit behind Megane Coupe Concept. Day or night, they form a highly distinctive signature. The boot, which pulls open and then lifts to minimize vertical travel, echoes the opening mechanism of the doors which are divided into two sections. The paneled door itself is topped by a separate glazed area and, as they open, the two parts deploy gracefully and elegantly in an independent movement redolent of dragonfly wings. A carbon arm at the rear of the doors connects them to the body structure and the system ensures particularly easy access for passengers. In addition to its practical aspect, this technological feature reveals a cabin that blends effortlessly with the elegance and energy of the exterior.

The cabin: a compelling extension of the exterior’s dynamic sensuality

The interior is redolent of the world of contemporary furniture. The independent, asymmetric front seats, which rise up from the sills, seem to float in midair. Their wafer-like forms express an airy lightness, while their enveloping design guarantees comfort and holds the occupants firmly in place. The aperture revealed by the open doors carries over to the front seat shells and the upper part of the two rear seats. This sculptural, one-piece structure, which is finished in fire red lacquer, ensures a seamless link between the exterior and the cabin. The centre console extends through to the rear seats and its layered design recalls the striated bar of the headlamp modules.

The futuristic, ethereal dashboard features expressive, flowing lines and can be divided into two distinct sections: the red lacquered main structure and black nubuck inserts which can hold small items. This embedded zone houses the sophisticated instrumentation which takes its inspiration from aviator-style watches, including a speedometer which displays the speed in analogue form on the periphery and in digital form in the centre, plus an analogue rev-counter. Both feature black metallic backgrounds with white graphics and red backlighting.

The choice of colours and materials is another means by which the exterior and interior have been harmonized to highlight Megane Coupe Concept’s volumes and magic. The iridescent Dragon Grey body-color goes well with the dragonfly-like door-opening mechanism and the paintwork’s rainbow finish gives a fresh vision of the car every time the light changes: even at rest, it appears to be in movement. Meanwhile, the interior’s contrasting color-scheme underpins the dynamic exterior thanks to the blend of fire red lacquer (dashboard, upper part of the centre console, front seatbacks, etc.) and softer black leather or nubuck for the door panels, seat cushions and centre console). The door panels themselves incorporate supple, slide-locking stowage, while the floor is protected by a black, modern, graphic mesh. Carrying over the red of the interior, there are hints of red outside, too, including the roofline, foglamp surrounds, wheel spokes and exhaust tailpipes.

The cabin equipment is modern and intuitive

The different controls have been inspired by Renault’s ‘Touch Design’ approach and are both simple and practical. The multi-media control on the centre console is coupled with a display divided into three zones. The central part displays all journey-related information (navigation, radio, music, video, Bluetooth® telephone), while the screens on either side show the images relayed by cameras incorporated in the exterior mirrors. Megane Coupe Concept is locked and unlocked using a Samsung F700 mobile phone which serves as a hands-free card and connects to the centre console. Both rear passengers benefit from a portable Samsung P2 audio/video multimedia player with touch screen which they can use to swap files using the mp3/video Bluetooth controls.

The four-zone climate control system allows each passenger to select the temperature they prefer using controls housed either side of the dashboard in the case of the front passengers or on the front seatbacks for rear occupants.

Special care has also gone into ensuring that the cabin is brightly lit. The red backlighting of the instruments contrasts with the surrounding black backgrounds. Meanwhile, the panoramic windscreen extends over the roof to bathe the cabin with light during the day and blue-hued cabin lighting at night.

A show car dedicated to passion and driving pleasure

Megane Coupe Concept’s generous bumper, wide, low grille and alveolar air-intake point to the presence of a high-performance powerplant under the bonnet. Indeed, Megane Coupe Concept is powered by a 200hp, two-litre turbocharged petrol engine which delivers maximum torque of 280Nm at 2,600rpm and peak power of 200hp at 5,800rpm, to ensure response and flexibility at all engine speeds for everyday motoring pleasure. Mated to a manual six-speed gearbox, the 2.0 Turbo unit accelerates Megane Coupe Concept from zero to 62 mph in just 7.2 seconds, yet it returns economical fuel consumption of just 6.5 litres/100km (154g of CO2/km). In order to exploit this engine to the full, Megane Coupe Concept features a sport chassis, plus suspension and steering engineered to guarantee precise, responsive handling.

This promise is pronounced by its 21-inch aluminium alloy, seven-spoke, satin-finish Dragon Grey wheels equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres (245/35) which provide outstanding grip for even greater driving pleasure. Megane Coupe Concept is a compact, stylish, dynamic coupe which delivers undeniable driving pleasure, while its sporty calling is also expressed by its modern, elegant cabin.

Edo Competition Ferrari Enzo 2008

Edo Competition’s tuning package for the Ferrari Enzo includes both performance and aesthetic modifications.

Power output of the 6 litre V12 has been increased to 700 horsepower, while the torque output stands at 527 lb/ft @ 5800 rpm. It makes the Edo Competition Ferrari Enzo a top speed of 230 mph and a 0-60 mph sprint time of 3.5 seconds.

Avro 720 Mirage Ford GT - a new limited edition of the Ford GT have been created by Avro Motor Cars together with Roush Technologies.

The engine of Avro 720 Mirage Ford GT had been recalibrated and may develops 720 bhp at 6950 rpm and a massive 815 Nm (627lb.ft.) of torque at 4800 rpm.

Avro’s 720 Mirage Ford GT… The Ultimate Limited Edition!

Just as the Ford GT becomes a legend in its own time, Avro Motor Cars, the Brooklands-based supercar specialist, has joined forces with Roush Technologies in the UK to create a further strictly limited edition of the car. The Avro 720 Mirage special edition will be limited to just 10 cars – the first of which has just been rolled out of Roush’s Technical Centre in Brentwood, Essex.

Finished in vibrant Arancia Metallica (Italian Metallic Orange) with semi-matt black details and wheels – and exclusive sill plates and side decals, the 720 Mirage incorporates a significant range of engine and mechanical upgrades. Changes in appearance include the deletion of the rear bumper – partly to save weight – and each car will carry an exclusive numbered Avro plaque on the centre tunnel.

Roush Technologies’ close association with the Ford GT programme includes the homologation of the European cars. The company is also the only officially appointed Ford approved service centre for the cars in the UK. Now, its engineers have applied a custom calibration package to the car, to extract a delivered, mean 720bhp at 6950rpm and a massive 815Nm (627lb.ft.) of torque at 4800rpm. The car is also derestricted, which gives a top speed capability in excess of 220mph (354km/h).

Central to the increased power is a larger – and polished – Whipple supercharger. The induction side of the engine also includes an Accufab throttle body and inlet sleeve. An Accufab X pipe exhaust system with ceramic-coated tips is also fitted. Other engine equipment includes a Mafia MAF sensor adaptor and a transmission breather catch tank.

The running gear on the Avro 720 Mirage has been appropriately upgraded to match the boost in power. The front and rear track is 5mm wider than the standard car. The front brakes use AP Racing 6-pot front callipers with Stillen drilled and slotted rotors – and similar rotors are used also at the rear. The suspension has been lowered by 25mm – and uprated to include KW’s Variant 3 fully adjustable coil-over system.

Avro Managing Director, Andy McGrath says, “When we created the highly successful Roush 600RE edition, we recognized the potential in the car to go a step further. The Ford GT is already a rare and sought after motorcar and simply identifying and locating more available untitled vehicles has been a significant challenge for us. The 720 Mirage is available exclusively from Avro – and once these cars are completed, we believe there will be no more. Examples of our 600RE edition are now located in several parts of the world – and we expect the market response to the 720 Mirage to be similarly international.”

2009 Cadillac XLR V Car

Cadillac has made announcement for the updates of 2009 Cadillac XLR-V. The 2009 Cadillac XLR-V design has been updated for both front and rear, and now shows an obvious family resemblance with the CTS sports sedan.

Featuring new fog lamps, the 2009 Cadillac XLR-V also comes with an updated interior, redesigned air intakes, and a two-piece grille.

The 2009 Cadillac XLR-V will have 330 kW / 450 hp since it’s powered by a 4.4-litre Supercharged Northstar V8 engine.

Unfortunately, there are no pricing information for this 2009 Cadillac XLR-V being announced yet, and this 2009 Cadillac XLR-V will become available in autumn.

One of the stars of the forthcoming 27th annual Lake Wörther Tour in Austria, the A3 TDI clubsport quattro extracts an incredible 450Nm of torque and maximum power of 224PS from its 2.0-litre, common rail fuel injected TDI unit, allowing it to race from rest to 62mph in just 6.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 149mph

The Audi A3 TDI clubsport quattro will leave show-goers in no doubt as to its capabilities, emphasizing them both acoustically through its sonorous exhaust and visually with a series of exclusive parts mounted on the body and in the interior. Audi is the trailblazer of engine manufacture. Since their debut back in 1989, the TDI engines have long since established themselves helped by their powerful, refined and efficient character. The success that the diesel-powered Audi R10 TDI racing car has been enjoying for two years now in the Le Mans 24 Hours and in the American Le Mans Series is clear testimony to this technology’s tremendous potential.

2008 Lotus Elise SC (Supercharged)

Lotus announced the details of the 2008 Lotus Elise Supercharged (Lotus ELise SC). The 2008 The 2008 Lotus Elise Supercharged is powered by the 1.8-litre 2-ZZ VVTL-i engine equipped with a Lotus-designed, Magnuson-produced supercharger that uses a smaller Eaton rotor pack (an M45 unit) than that of the Exige S, and also coupled with a bespoke intake manifold plenum as part of a single-piece casting.

Developing 162 kW and 212 Nm at 5000 rpm, the 2008 Lotus Elise SC has weight 870 kg and reach the top speed at 241 km/h. However, the 2008 Lotus Elise SC also has the following acceleration times: 0-100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, 0-160 km/h in 10.7 seconds.

Introducing the Supercharged Elise SC, the newest addition to the 2008 Lotus line-up.

Easily defined by its new rear spoiler and unique alloy wheels, this is the first time the multi-award winning roadster has been fitted with an all-new supercharger installation producing 162kW and an electrifying 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds.

This is no mere engine swap from the supercharged Exige. Applied to the current Elise’s 1.8-litre 2-ZZ VVTL-i engine, the Lotus-designed, Magnuson-produced supercharger uses a smaller Eaton rotor pack (an M45 unit) than that of the Exige S, and is married to the bespoke intake manifold plenum as part of a single-piece casting.

Combined with the absence of an intercooler and its associated pipe-work, this integrated supercharger/intake assembly contributes to an 8kg reduction in engine weight compared with the Exige S.

A further benefit of dispensing with the intercooler for the Elise SC application is the supercharger packaging viability for Elise and improved rear visibility.

The Elise SC has been designed to possess different driving characteristics to the Exige S. In keeping with its role as a supremely fast road car rather than extreme track machine, throttle response is very progressive resulting in a measured, more refined driving experience.

The variable camshaft shifting, for example, does not operate at a single point; the switchover can vary between 4000rpm-6200rpm depending on how it’s being driven.

As expected in a car with 162kW and weighing just 870kg, the performance of the Elise SC is stunning: 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds, 0-160km/h in 10.7 seconds and a top speed of 241km/h. Like the 141kW Elise R, the Elise SC runs a six-speed gearbox.

A new bespoke alloy wheel design is introduced to the Elise SC with the rears increasing in width half an inch to 8-inches which offers increased grip from the standard Lotus specific Yokohama AD07 LTS 225/45 R17 tires.

In addition to this extreme performance, the fuel economy of the Elise SC is equally impressive with an estimated combined figure of 8.5litres/100km.

The Elise SC also sees several other enhancements evident across the Elise and Exige range that make it more sophisticated and better value than ever.

An advanced new MY08 instrument cluster provides extra information about vehicle systems. This includes servicing reminders in a ‘secret until lit’ technology, so drivers won’t be alerted to such details until deemed necessary.

A new MY08 alarm/immobiliser system has allowed the introduction of a new Lotus designed key with integrated fob, the famous Lotus roundel operating as one of its three functional buttons.

The number of option packs for the Elise has been simplified from four to two, but with increased specification for each. And should customers wish to further personalise their Lotus, there is a myriad of accessories available.

The Lotus Elise SC is built around the revolutionary and award-winning extruded and bonded aluminum chassis, with a lightweight steel rear subframe. The chassis itself weighs just 68kg with a stiffness of 9500Nm per degree.

Paint ranges have been revised for 2008 including the addition of vibrant pearlescent colors. The new Premium Color Range has been designed to offer further customising and due to the more sophisticated manufacturing process, have been individually priced.

Driving any Lotus is an experience like no other – and the Elise SC is no different. Few cars can match the delicacy and accuracy of the steering, throttle and brakes. Only a Lotus has the relatively soft springs and firm damping to give superb body control and a truly exhilarating ride. And only a Lotus can turn in such performance with such minimal environmental impact in terms of emissions and fuel consumption.

It’s all down to lightweight :

Weighing a lithe 870kg, the Elise SC is just 10kg more than the Elise S – or a 1 percent weight increase; more than compensated with a 62 percent more power. With 212Nm at 5000rpm, the Elise SC also has 15 percent more power and 17 percent more torque than the Elise R.

Light weight has benefits for acceleration, handling, ride comfort, braking and the environment. Braking comes from AP Racing callipers at the front and Brembo calipers at the rear linked to 282mm vented and cross-drilled cast iron discs – you’d never call an Elise ‘under braked’.

An advanced ABS system incorporates an anti-lock system which is so unobtrusive, most drivers will not realise it’s working – unless it’s needed, and even then the system keeps a subtly low profile. The ABS system is linked to a lightweight pedal box with steel pedal arms and extruded aluminum pads. This unit also has an electronic (drive-by-wire) throttle for quick, smooth and more linear engine response.

Finally, the Elise SC enjoys a bespoke spoiler mounted onto the rear wing to which provides an aerodynamic and aesthetic difference to other Elise variants. Add to this unique Lotus 6-spoke Y-type lightweight cast alloy wheels and the Elise SC becomes instantly recognisable as the premier model in the Lotus Elise range.

New dials and more

The new instrument panel in Elise features new stylish black back-lit dials and a new high-definition LCD message panel that can display a scrolling message with vehicle system information.

The new instruments constantly display fuel, engine temperature and odometer; however it can also display the time, trip distance or a digital speed readout in mph.

Warning symbols are ‘secret until lit’, keeping the instrumentation free from visual clutter and distraction until necessary.

New gear-change ‘shift’ lights also remain hidden until required. Three cumulative up-shift lights simultaneously flash just before the rev-limiter at a speed dependent on which gear is selected.

The key issue

Elise and Exige both have a new one-piece alarm/immobiliser and key. This has enabled a new design that incorporates three buttons. The first button is the famous Lotus roundel which locks the doors and sets the immobilizer. The second button unlocks and deactivates it, while the third is a panic function.

Pontiac Solstice Coupe is a natural development of the Solstice Roadster. However, for drivers still wanting an open-air experience, the Pontiac Solstice Coupe also features a removable roof panel, fully opening the cockpit to the sky.

Powered by a standard 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder engine, the Pontiac Solstice coupe may generates 173 horsepower (129 kW), while the GXP version is equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged Ecotec engine with 260 horsepower (194 kW).

The Pontiac Solstice Coupe model was inspired by the Solstice coupe concept shown at the North American International Auto Show in 2002. True to the concept, it is a modern sports car with classic lines. The roofline has a “fastback” shape with stylized “rails” that run from the front of the roof to the rear, culminating in a stylish and functional ducktail-style rear spoiler.

The Solstice coupe’s roof is fixed aft of the B-pillars, with side windows and a rear liftglass for access to the cargo area. The roof panel is easily removed from the passenger compartment, and an optional soft roof cover stores in the cargo area. A home storage case for the roof panel will be offered through GM Accessories.

Despite its dramatic new look, engineers made only minor structural changes to create the Solstice coupe. The rear fenders and rear fascia are the same as those on the convertible. New taillight assemblies flow more smoothly into the tapered roofline.

The Pontiac Solstice Coupe’s roof structure was strengthened with additional support elements, including an aluminum roof bow attached with aluminum brackets. The bow and brackets are stiff, yet low in mass, a design feature that pervades the coupe’s overall construction. The roof includes a lightweight sheet molding compound cover affixed to a rigid aluminum frame for additional lightweight support. A lightweight magnesium roof panel frame weighs just 31 pounds (14.2 kg) and can be removed by one person. The cover is also made of sheet molding compound.

Much of the Solstice coupe’s interior remains the same as that of the convertible. However, the area behind the seats was redesigned for easy access to the cargo area, and a storage tray was mounted directly behind the headrests.

The Carlsson CD32 Mercedes ML is based on the Mercedes ML 320 CDI that has received a power upgrade that takes it up to 269 hp. The Carlsson CD32 Mercedes ML uses the Carlsson C-Tronic Diesel POWER performance Kit to develop 269 bhp/198 kW and 612 Nm of torque at 1800 rpm.

The luxurious 2009 CL550 coupe (382 hp, 391 lb.-ft) will receive the latest version of the Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC all-wheel drive system as standard equipment. As modern all-wheel-drive systems become even more refined, they are increasingly popular, especially in the luxury car market. With negligible weight and fuel-efficiency trade-offs, full-time all-wheel-drive systems provide year-round traction and stability benefits on both wet and dry roads.

The V8-powered 518hp CL63 AMG and the V12-powered 510 hp CL600 and 604 hp CL65 AMG models will continue with rear-wheel-drive powertrain. The 2009 CL line goes on sale in the summer of this year.

The Latest 4MATIC System

The latest 4MATIC system features a new-generation full-time all-wheel-drive system that’s integrated into the seven-speed automatic transmission. Having made its debut on the new-generation 2007 S-Class sedan, the system fits right into the standard CL body and utilizes the existing front suspension (gone are the special suspension parts and wider transmission tunnel that were necessary on earlier 4MATIC systems). The extra gears and shafts that drive the front wheels now weigh only 154 pounds more than the rear-wheel-drive model. Beginning from the right side of the transmission tail section, a driveshaft powers a front final drive and differential unit just to the right of the engine oil pan. The axle shaft for the left front wheel passes through a tube that’s encapsulated in the engine oil pan.

Improved Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency has been improved, due to a number of innovative measures that minimize the energy needed to turn the extra all-wheel-drive shafts and gears. In particular, only two gears now power the front driveshaft (instead of the previous three), and the direction of rotation is cleverly corrected in the front final drive without additional gears. Recessing the universal joint for the front driveshaft into the transmission output gear also saved space, helping to fit the entire drive system into the standard body shell.

Newly developed short-range radar sweeps the first 33 yards in a fan-shaped 80-degree pattern, working in tandem with a narrower nine-degree beam of longer-range radar.

The two radar frequencies complement each other to cover a full range of more than 160 yards – more than 1½ football fields. During approval of the new 24-gigahertz radar frequency, government agencies cited its potential to improve traffic safety, reduce injuries and ultimately save lives.

Blind Spot Alert Also Helps Make Driving Less Stressful

As a new option in conjunction with Distronic Plus, a blind spot alert system monitors those hard-to-see areas in adjacent lanes, to help make changing lanes safer and, in general, make driving less stressful. What’s more, when other vehicles enter the blind spots on either side of the CL coupe, a red warning light embedded in the outside mirror alerts the driver. And, if the driver doesn’t notice the warning and operates the turn signal as a prelude to changing lanes, the system then blinks the mirror warning light and sounds an alarm.

The blind spot alert system uses six short-range radar sensors (four in the rear bumper and two in the front) to sense overtaking vehicles as well as vehicles that have already been passed. Monitoring the zone to the side and rear on the left and right, the blind spot alert system works at any speed above 18 mph.

Radar-Based Park Assist

Distronic Plus also incorporates radar-based Park Assist that provides a warning tone and a visual readout of the distance to adjacent parked vehicles. This option utilizes the same radar sensors mounted in the bumpers, and its clean look replaces the visible “portholes” of the previous ultrasonic-based system.

An optional rear view camera also helps makes reverse parking easier and safer. Whenever reverse is engaged, a camera hidden just above the license plate displays the area behind the car on the COMAND screen, and lines that change with steering input are shown on the display to assist the driver in parking maneuvers.

Brake Assist Now Teams Up With Distronic Plus

In the early 1990s, Mercedes-Benz engineers conducting simulator tests discovered that many drivers don’t push the brake pedal hard enough in emergency braking, a discovery that led to the development of Brake Assist, standard equipment on all Mercedes-Benz vehicles since late 1990s. Brake Assist has proven itself a million times, and tests show vehicles equipped with Brake Assist are involved in 26 percent fewer accidents.

On the latest CL coupe, an enhanced version of the Mercedes-Benz Brake Assist system not only supplies braking assist in emergencies as soon as the driver applies the brake pedal, but also measures the distance to the vehicle ahead (thanks to Distronic Plus) and adjusts brake pressure if the driver doesn’t brake hard enough. While Brake Assist is only triggered by the driver’s reaction on the brake pedal, Brake Assist Plus also considers the closing speed of the vehicle ahead based on radar signals from the Distronic Plus system.

In extensive tests conducted by Mercedes researchers using 300 drivers, the integrated system reduced rear collisions in heavy city traffic by 75 percent. During testing, data recorders and video cameras documented more than 250,000 real-world miles covered by 200 drivers in the U.S. and Europe, while 100 drivers participated in months of intense testing on the DaimlerChrysler driving simulator in Berlin.

Infra-Red Night View Assist

Another innovative technology on the CL coupe is optional Night View Assist, which can extend the driver’s ability to see ahead to nearly 500 feet. In contrast to passive systems that rely on thermal imaging, this active system bathes the road ahead with invisible infra-red light from two projector beams mounted in the headlights. An infra-red camera discreetly mounted in the windshield receives the reflected images and displays them in a high-resolution display in the instrument cluster. The result is akin to a highly detailed black & white video image.

Ingolstadt – The new Audi Q5 combines the dynamism of a sports sedan with highly variable interior and versatile options for leisure-time and family use. Strong and efficient engines, quattro permanent all-wheel drive and agile running gear have been brought together to create a superior technology package for both on- and off-road driving. The sportiest SUV in its class is dynamic, multifunctional and comfortable.

The dimensions alone indicate that this is a SUV of all-new proportions. Measuring 4.63 meters (15.19 feet) long and 1.88 meters (6.17 feet) wide, the Audi Q5 is just 1.65 meters (5.41 feet) high – making it sportier than any of its competitors. What’s more, this SUV sets another benchmark in its class with a low drag coefficient of 0.33.

With its sporty elegance and artfully sculpted forms, the design of the Audi Q5 is perfectly in tune with the character of Audi as a brand. Long wheelbase, roomy interior

At 2.81 meters (9.22 feet), the wheelbase is the longest in its segment – creating a roomy interior on board the Audi Q5. The vehicle comfortably accommodates five persons in ergonomically designed seats that can be flexibly arranged. The backrests for the rear seats are angle-adjustable and especially easy to fold down by activating the remote release lever in the luggage compartment. This compartment, offering access to a second storage area under the floor, then expands from 540 to 1,560 liters (19.07 to 55.09 cubic feet) in volume.

The Audi Q5 is a multi-talent for sport, leisure-time and family activities. As an option, Audi offers the “rear bench seat plus”, which slides 100 millimeters (3.94 inches) lengthwise to provide a load-through facility. The front passenger’s seat can be outfitted with a folding backrest for transportation of long objects such as surfboards. The Audi Q5 is rolling off the production line for the USA in one engine/transmission combination: the fuel efficient 3.2 FSI six cylinder engine with fast-shifting Tiptronic and quattro permanent all-wheel drive. This engine is direct-injection – characterized by outstanding performance, hefty propulsive power and cultivated running while at the same time offering impressive fuel efficiency. The pioneer of all-wheel drive, Audi builds the Audi Q5 standard with quattro permanent all-wheel drive – the only logical solution for a dynamic SUV. In normal running conditions, the transfer case distributes the power to the front and rear axle in a 40:60 ratio for a rear-focused style that enhances driving pleasure. When needed, the quattro driveline can deliver up to 65 percent of the power to the front axle and a maximum of 85 percent to the rear axle.

The running gear in the Audi Q5 further emphasizes its sporty nature.
